In this blockbuster season ender, IRIS expands its forces to present three spectacular works new to the IRIS repertoire. John Adams helped define the direction of contemporary American music, finding inspiration for his operatic work in historic turning points of the 20th century. The Chairman Dances excerpt from his groundbreaking opera Nixon in China is an exuberant foxtrot for large orchestra, a marvelous synthesis of minimalist style and rhythmic complexity. The night's musical feast continues as IRIS celebrates the return of violinist Joshua Bell, whose fiery technique is perfectly suited to Lalo's rhapsodic showpiece, the Symphonie Espagnole. To close the concert, the captivating power of the Arabian Nights inspires Rimsky-Korsakov to transform the 19th-century fashion of Orientalism into stupendous orchestral wizardry as the tale of Scheherazade explodes in lush, dazzling color.

Now Playing Onstage in Memphis - Week of 4/06/2014 MIDTOWN OPERA FESTIVAL
Playhouse on the Square
4/3-4/13/2014
We launched this festival last year to showcase works scaled for intimate spaces, with special attention given to new and rarely performed operas. The Festival gives us an opportunity to make use of Playhouse on the Square - an acoustically perfect 347-seat theatre in Midtown Memphis. Year One of the festival was an overwhelming success. Our mainstage shows drew patrons from all over the country. And our ancillary ("fringe") events in the Festival Lounge were a big hit with patrons. These events included pre-show dinners and talks, as well as recitals from new American operas, children's opera, and late night, cabaret-style entertainment. (Last year's late-night events included some of the most memorable highlights of the Festival, such as Jamie Barton singing "The Alto's Lament," and Chad Sloan's rendition of "Craigslistlieder.") In April 2014, we'll present Year Two of the Festival. Building on the success of Year One, we're expanding the Festival to ten days. And, In addition to our mainstage operas, the festival will also feature the world premiere of an opera cycle entitled Ghosts of Crosstown.

Now Playing Onstage in Memphis - Week of 4/06/2014 JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Youth Empowerment Through Arts and Humanities
4/4-4/20/2014
It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

This drama is one of the great comedy plays by William Shakespeare. Our version is an inventive adaptation by director Justin Asher that puts a comic twist on the story…setting it in a seaside trailer park. Viola, cross dresses and takes the man's name of Cesario. Viola enters the service of the Duke of Illyria, Orsino. Orsino longs for the love of a neighbouring countess. Viola (Cesario) then falls in love with Orsino. To add to the farce Viola's (Cesario) identical twin, Sebastian arrives on the scene. Living in Olivia's household is her uncle, Sir Toby Belch, a merry character. The steward of the household is the conceited Malvolio. The plot illustrates jealousy, mistaken Identity, cross-dressing and features fights and duels. In the end Sebastian and Olivia fall in love and marry. Orsino realises that it is Viola that he loves and she agrees to marry him. Sir Toby Belch and Maria also decide to marry! Twelfth Night ends and everyone, except Malvolio, is happy and Shakespeare speaks of the madness of love.
