BWW Reviews: Good Theater's UNDERWATER GUY Lifts Performance Art to the PoeticBWW Reviews: Good Theater's UNDERWATER GUY Lifts Performance Art to the Poetic
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold (Maine)

(4/14/2014) - Portland's Good Theater closed its season with a highly original and poetic premiere of Stephen Underwood's multi-media performance piece, Underwater Guy. Underwood's play uses video, music, lights, scenery, and a single actor/narrator to recount the protagonist's lifelong obsession with diving, underwater exploration and photography. Part documentary, part dramatic monologue with movement, the rapid shifts in the modes of communication prove stimulating, sometimes surprising, but always engaging. For in Underwood's play, water is more than a habitat or a passion; it is a metaphor for his life's journey, and as such, the piece takes on a deeper significance and resonance.

Linda MacArthur Miele's staging of the Prokofiev classic played to sold out houses, comprised in good part by rapt youngsters, awed at the magic of the timeless fairy tale.

(4/11/2014) - A tribal dream of harmony and community is abruptly shattered by a band of roving vaudevillian miscreants who raucously sweep in and stage a faux 'minstrel show' to gorge themselves on stories of violence and chaos, and thus the musical The Elephant Piece launches the audience on a journey into musical mayhem and absurdist spectacle that ultimately touches the heart and gives hope that our species might just survive its own destructive nature.

(3/31/2014) - Portland Stage's production of Nina Raine's 2010 play,Tribes, offers a thoughtful exploration of the bonds forged by communication. The play, which premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London and later Off-Broadway, is a scathingly funny, warm look at a dysfunctional family and their interaction with their deaf son, Billy, who has not been raised in a deaf culture, but rather by his hearing parents and his siblings.

BWW Reviews: Elegant PRIVATE LIVES Graces Portland Players' StageBWW Reviews: Elegant PRIVATE LIVES Graces Portland Players' Stage
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold (Maine)

(3/24/2014) - Noel Coward's 1930 romantic comedy is a perennial pleasure, but one which requires an impeccable sense of period style and elan. The stylish new production at Portland Players rises to this challenge with an elegant, witty, well-paced rendition of this sendup of warring couples inextricably bound by both attraction and skirmish. Directed by Claudia Hughes, this five-character comedy of manners becomes a stylish romp with physical farce punctuated by Coward's scintillating verbal wit. Hughes imparts a gleeful air of insouciance to the production. Assisted by Paul Drinan in the fight sequences, she blocks her actors with balletic precision and perfect timing, as well as an excellent ear for the inner rhythms of the piece.

by BWW News Desk (Maine)

(3/23/2014) - Naked Shakespeare, Acorn Productions' acting company dedicated to presenting the works of the Bard in non-traditional venues without sets, lights, and costumes, resumes its monthly series of free performances of scenes and soliloquies in April. The company has not had a venue for these popular monthly collections of pieces from the Bard's canon since the old Wine Bar on Wharf Street closed about a year ago. These shows also feature the return of Artistic Director Michael Levine from a brief sabbatical as he directs and peforms in the April show. The May performance consists of an abridgement of the Acorn Shakespeare Conservatory's production of Hamletdirected by Michael Howard and featuring Karen Ball in the title role. In the company's tradition, both shows present the text in an accessible manner that enourages the audience to place the characters in a modern context in order to better understand the universal themes at work in the language. Performances take place on April 14 and May 12 at 7:30pm, and are offered free of charge with an $8 suggested donation. Please visit Naked Shakepeare's website for more information: www.nakedshakespeare.org or call the Acorn office at 854-0065. A complete calendar listing appears below.
