The Sound of Music - 2015 - US Tour

A brand new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by Jack O'Brien, will tour North America beginning September 2015. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony, Grammy and Academy Award winning Best Score, including "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "Edelweiss" and the title song.

"We plan to look more closely at this remarkable work — to tear off the varnish of the past and reveal one of the great, fresh glories of musical theater," says three-time Tony Award winning Director Jack O'Brien. Audiences across America will be among the first to see this all new production!

THE SOUND OF MUSIC features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by "The Trapp Family Singers" by Maria Augusta Trapp.

A gentle wish for peace and an acknowledgment of the beauty all around us. Those were the last words to flow out of the pen of Oscar Hammerstein II. Born into a legendary theatrical family, his career spanned over 40 years on Broadway and he worked with a myriad of partners, notably Sigmund Romberg and Jerome Kern. But it is his groundbreaking partnership with Richard Rodgers that produced the work he will forever be remembered for. The partnership won him 8 Tony awards and two Oscars for best song. A playwright and lyricist, he created 5 works that are still staples of regional and community theatres around the world and 4 lesser performed works that pushed boundaries and are the basis of the musical play that still is a model for modern theatre writers. In terms of theatrical giants, they don't come much bigger than Rodgers & Hammerstein.

What really helped make the learning process faster was that my professor’s selection of songs for the recital were from either Broadway or West End musicals like The Sound of Music or Jekyll and Hyde. Majority of them were songs I knew since I was a child or I just learned them throughout the years.

I was instructed to write my reflection in this format: favorite character, song, actor/actress, and production. While many of the shows my teacher told me to listen to were ones I was familiar with, it brought me great joy to explore musicals I have yet to discover then.

Vonnegut proposed that every story ever told followed a graphable shape. The stories are graphed on two axes: the vertical “good fortune-ill fortune” axis and the horizontal “beginning-end” axis. Perhaps stories aren’t as unique as we think they are—and perhaps that isn’t a bad thing.
