Twenty-five years ago in Grand Rapids, the Van Andel Arena still was on the drawing board. Meijer Gardens had opened just three months earlier, but it would be many years before an outdoor amphitheater would be built as a venue for summer concerts. At Cannonsburg Ski Area, on a steamy evening in mid-July, the Grand Rapids Symphony launched a brand new, outdoor concert experience called the Picnic Pops. This season The Grand Rapids Symphony celebrates its 25th Anniversary of its D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops with a series of three shows that are all time favorites with Picnic Pops audiences plus a special event capping off four weeks of concerts at Cannonsburg.

Bandits on the Run have unveiled “Potted Plant,” the first single from the upcoming EP, Bandits Live at the Power Station. The band describes the tune as their 'firestarter song,” explaining, ''Potted Plant' has had many lives — it was originally cooked up by Roy Dodger with his hometown friends and first band of musical ruffians, Ragamuffin. Bandits have since taken it on as our adopted tune, putting our own spin on it and using it busking in the subways to announce our arrival — that we are here shake things up. It's held a place of honor in banditry ever since as an off-kilter anthem to mischief and camaraderie.'

It's that time of the week, theater lovers! With the weekend set to kick off at any moment - personally, we like to consider Thursday morning at 12:01 a.m. the official start of the weekend (that's directed primarily to the Dowager Countess of Grantham who quite clearly didn't understand what actually constitutes a 'weekend') - so we are back with a few suggestions of our own to help make your job easier. There are some new shows opening, others which are continuing their runs and still more which will be winding up their slate of performances this weekend!

Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul have released a new song, 'A World Of Our Own,' from their forthcoming album Summer Of Sorcery due May 3 on Wicked Cool/UMe. The soulful, euphoric track, which premiered via Billboard yesterday who described it as having 'a shimmering Phil Spector quality,' conjures up visions of young love, summer nights and a simpler era when Girl Groups dominated the airwaves. 'Growing up, The Shirelles, The Chiffons, The Ronettes, The Crystals and The Shangri-Las were really important to me,' says Little Steven aka Steven Van Zandt. 'This song is my take on the type of song I might have written for a Girl Group like one of those fantastic acts back in the day.'
