by BWW News Desk - Oct 29, 2018

From the Emmy-winning team behind the mega-hit television series, 'Friends,' comes Rapunzel. A familiar tale with a fantastic new spin, it has all of the charm that you'd expect from the minds that have been making the world laugh non-stop for more than two decades.  Forced to live alone in a tower with nothing but her hair and her witch (literally) of a 'mother,' Rapunzel's sixteenth birthday has come, meaning that she'll be able to see the outside world for the first time, just as her 'mother' promised. Scared to let her go, though, the witch reneges. Lucky for Rapunzel a young Prince named Brian happens across her tower and calls out to her, as he's seen the witch do: 'Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair!' Before the Prince and Rapunzel have their inevitable 'happily Ever After,' though, they're going to have to face the wrath of the witch and a few other hilarious obstacles. BWW Spotlight/Review: SWEET CHARITY at The Hartt School Of The University Of Hartford
by Joseph Harrison - Oct 22, 2018

It will come as no surprise to theater fans in Connecticut that we have an embarrassment of riches in our state when it comes to our favorite past-time. From multiple touring houses to some of the finest professional theaters in the country to top-notch community theater companies - Connecticut has it all. But what often gets overlooked in the sea of theatrical choices are the top-rated college and university theater programs right in our own back yard. After years of ignorance (or simple lack of awareness), I witnessed, first hand, the amazing work being produced by the students at one of these schools, The Hartt School of the University of Hartford. This dedication to not only learning the craft, but delivering a powerful and thrilling performance was front and center in the school's most recent production of Neil Simon, Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields' classic musical SWEET CHARITY, which ran for just four (too) short days October 18 - 21st. BWW Review: Superb Cast, Serviceable Script Mark The World Premiere of ALL OUT OF LOVE, The Musical
by Robert Encila-Celdran - Oct 22, 2018

Lonesome is the perch where this avid music fan must critique a genre consumed by a devout subculture. Musical taste is a subjective value, which ought to render all taste buds sacrosanct and perhaps left alone. The task is more involved when said genre becomes a basis for an international musical. by Lauren Van Hemert - Nov 30, 2018

Cute costumed kids filed into The Duke Energy Center Thursday night to see Lythgoe Family Panto production of ALADDIN AND HIS WINTER WISH. The show marks the first of a three-year partnership between the Lythgoe family and North Carolina Theatre and the first foray into the Christmas show market for North Carolina Theatre. While this isn't the Disney version of ALADDIN, the story is essentially the same. And by all accounts, the kids in the audience loved every minute of it. (more...)

BWW Review: Happy Days Are Here Again as BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL Comes To Calgary
by Vicki Trask - Nov 1, 2018

There is a reason bio-musicals and jukebox tales are so popular. There is a nostalgia and comfort in knowing the music and the people that allows an audience to give themselves over to the magic of theatre. I've found audiences more susceptible to suspension of disbelief if there is an element of the familiar - like an historical figure or famous artist. It then becomes the task of the production to take that malleable group and create a story with meaning. (more...)

BWW Review: Rom Com-esque TWELVE DATES OF CHRISTMAS Rings in the Holidays at Next Act Theatre
by Kelsey Lawler - Dec 4, 2018

Twelve (largely-failed) meet-cutes, four performers, two backup singers, and one very chatty partridge in a pear tree suffering from a year of aloneness. It's a different kind of Christmas show, to be sure. Simple in its premise and more of an introspective snapshot of one woman's life, rather than the sweeping "good will toward men" sentimentality that often accompanies such holiday fare. (more...)
