ReOrient Festival Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Golden Thread Productions, the first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its prestigious ReOrient 2019 Festival of Short Plays with seven fully produced short plays, two panel discussions, and a national convening of Middle Eastern theatre artists.
The Marsh Berkeley Presents THE JAP BOX

Through monologue and magic, Japanese American magician David Hirata will excavate the mysteries and stories of magician Namigoro Sumidagawa in The Jap Box, making its debut at The Marsh Berkeley this October. In 1866, Sumidagawa became the first Japanese citizen in over 200 years to receive a passport to leave the country. As part of the a?oeImperil Japanese Troupe,a?? he dazzled audiences across Victorian America with his exotic stage magic and became a media celebrity. By the time Sumidagawa returned home, his prize trick had been appropriated by American magicians in yellowface and rechristened as the a?oeJap Box.a?? Over a century later, Hirata unveils illusions and surprises from this Japanese American story in his latest solo show, The Jap Box. Post-show talkbacks, featuring experts in everything from history to magic, will be offered throughout the run (dates below). The Jap Box will be presented October 26 - December 1, 2019 (press opening: November 2) with performances at 5:00pm Saturdays and 2:00pm Sundays at The Marsh Berkeley, 2120 Allston Way, Berkeley. The first performance for Brian Copeland's (in partnership with the Marin Cultural Association) The Best of San Francisco Solo Series at The Marin Center's Showcase Theater is Irma Herrera's solo show Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name?, a new work that weaves history and comedic insights into stories about names, shedding light and throwing shade on societal prejudices and assumptions. When giving her name its correct Spanish pronunciation, Irma often gets the, 'where are you from?' question. The assumption: that she is a foreigner. Irma's family has been in South Texas for generations, and the award-winning social justice activist, lawyer, and journalist thinks of herself as American as apple pie.

San Francisco Opera Announces Casting Update For Gounod's ROMEO & JULIET

San Francisco Opera today announced a cast change for Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet (Roméo et Juliette), which opens the Company's 97th season on September 6, 2019 and runs for seven performances through October 1 at the War Memorial Opera House. Samoan-born New Zealand tenor Pene Pati, originally scheduled to sing Romeo on October 1, will perform the role in all performances, replacing Bryan Hymel who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

Previously the company's Literary Manager, Liang succeeds Founding Artistic Director Lily Tung Crystal, who is stepping down to become the Artistic Director of Theater Mu in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Tung Crystal remains part of Ferocious Lotus as co-founder and artistic director emeritus.

California Shakespeare Theater Announces 46th Season

California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) announces three of the four titles for its 2020 Season at the Bruns Amphitheater: the West Coast Premiere of Aeschylus' The Oresteia by Ellen McLaughlin, May 27-June 14; the world premiere of 1001 Nights (A Retelling) by Leila Buck and Evren Odcikin, August 19-September 6; and Romeo y Juilet by William Shakespeare in a new bilingual adaptation by Karen Zacarías, September 23-October 1; with a to-be-announced Shakespeare play which will run July 8-26. Cast and creative teams for each will be announced at a later date.
