While we sell tickets for our plays and classes, those only cover production costs and don't cover important things like rent, utilities, and insurance. In order to pay the bills we rely on fundraising. About 50% of our annual budget comes from fundraising, and most of that comes from individual donors and not businesses or grants. One of the most fun things we do to raise money is hold a heck of a party once a year! (more...)

Central Works 2018 season of new plays leaps into the spring with the world premiere of Palace Wreckers, Inc, written and directed by Gary Graves, opening with a press night on Saturday, May 12, and running through June 10  (previews May 10 & 11) in architect Julia Morgan's historic Berkeley City Club. This Central Works Method play is a "revenge comedy" - based on a Greek tragedy, turned into a contemporary comedy. The Central Works Method brings together writer, actors and director at the very outset of the playwriting process. In a supportive workshop environment, group research and collective brainstorming contribute to the entire development of the script. (more...)

Conjuring the image of a lonely all-night truck stop along Highway 1 on the California coast, all but lost in the fog that comes creeping along the shoreline, "Sister Orchid" speaks of the night, the outsider, the plaintive wail of those lost at sea. "Sister Orchid" was conceived in solitude, executed in darkness.
