The Madness of Lady Bright at Venue: iMPACt Center for Art & Dance

The Madness of Lady Bright is a poignant one-act play about Leslie Bright, an aging drag queen living alone in a New York City rooming house. Over the course of one evening, a series of encounters force him to confront his loneliness, isolation, and fear of growing old. Blending humor with heartbreak, Lanford Wilson’s groundbreaking play explores the universal need for companionship and human connection while reflecting on the particular social marginalization experienced by gay men in 1960s America.

In Mannakin Theater & Dance’s new production, director and choreographer Nathan Cottam—who also stars as Leslie Bright—brings movement into the world of the play. Drawing on Leslie’s fascination with the ballet Giselle and her devotion to Albrecht, the Boy and Girl are voiced by live readers while dancers embody the characters onstage, creating a physical expression of Leslie’s memories, fantasies, and inner life.

First produced in 1964, The Madness of Lady Bright was one of the earliest Off-Off-Broadway plays to center an openly gay character. Mannakin’s production brings Wilson’s landmark work to a contemporary audience through an intimate combination of theater, dance, and live music.
