Under the glow of gas lamps, boughs of holly and British flags, The Great Dickens Christmas Fair & Victorian Holiday Party returns to the historic Cow Palace for its 42nd season, running weekends November 21 through December 20, 2026.
Presented for five weekends, including the Friday after Thanksgiving, The Great Dickens Christmas Fair transforms over 140,000 square feet of the Cow Palace Exhibition Halls into an immersive recreation of Christmas Eve in Charles Dickens’ London.
From the moment visitors enter the environment of the Fair, the modern world gives way to bustling streets populated by hundreds of costumed characters: chimney sweeps and street vendors, sailors and shopkeepers, carolers and musicians, literary icons, colorful denizens of Victorian society — and, of course, Mr. Charles Dickens himself!
A Holiday Tradition Meant to Be Experienced
Generations of Bay Area families have made the Dickens Fair part of their very own holiday tradition.
Unlike a conventional stage production, festival or Christmas market, The Great Dickens Christmas Fair envelops its visitors in an entire theatrical world. Patrons can encounter Ebenezer Scrooge and the spirits of A Christmas Carol, watch Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger navigate the streets of London, meet Father Christmas, listen to traditional carolers, stumble upon spontaneous street scenes, join a Victorian waltz, or settle into a pub and join musicians and performers in song.
The Great Dickens Christmas Fair presents much more than a historical recreation of Victorian London. “It's about creating a shared experience where families and friends can leave the ordinary world behind and become part of the story," said Drew Patterson, a third-generation producer of the Fair.
Theatres, Music Halls, Pubs and Dance Floors
Entertainment fills every corner of the Fair throughout the day, from original staged productions and music hall performances to magic, comedy, storytelling, dancing and spontaneous street theater.
Visitors can join the festivities at Fezziwig’s Warehouse, where the holiday party from A Christmas Carol comes to life with Victorian music, dancing, and parlour games. Guests are encouraged to take to the floor with friends and family, or partner with experienced dancers ready to introduce newcomers to period waltzes and reels.
Elsewhere, London pubs and music halls offer lively entertainment, songs, and colorful characters, while theatrical venues present performances inspired by the literature and personalities of the era.
Mr. Dickens may be found entertaining visitors, friends, and literary characters in his study, while familiar figures from his novels appear magically throughout the streets. Escorted by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, witness Ebenezer Scrooge redeemed from cantankerous miser to generous Uncle and merrymaker!
Parades and seasonal celebrations add to the atmosphere, including the arrival of Father Christmas with his festive procession of jolly revelers.
And because the Fair is an improvisational, immersive environment, there is no single route or schedule required to experience it. Guests are encouraged to wander, explore, and discover their own version of Dickens’ London.
A Victorian Holiday Marketplace
Shopping in a marketplace filled to overflowing with unique gifts has been an important part of the Dickens Fair experience since its earliest years. The Fair’s lamp-lit shops and adorned carts create an always intriguing and thoughtfully curated alternative to conventional holiday shopping.
Artisans and specialty merchants offer handcrafted and distinctive gifts, including handmade figurines, artful cards, fine soaps, jewelry, toys, holiday decor, and glass, wood, and leather goods.
Visitors can browse the shops while interacting with merchants and Dickensian characters throughout the winding lanes, making the marketplace itself part of the theatrical environment.
For those who enjoy dressing for the occasion, Victorian-inspired clothing, hats, and accessories provide opportunities to add a little 19th-century style to the holidays. Costumes are admired, but never required.
A Feast for the Holidays
Food and drink are an essential part of a day of Dickensian delights in Victorian London.
The aroma of warm cinnamon-roasted almonds mingles with the sounds of the Fair as visitors explore food booths, tea rooms, pubs, and specialty shops.
Traditional favorites include meat pies, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and sweet or savory crepes. Handmade chocolates, English tea cakes, and small-batch traditional lemon curd and scones provide the perfect complement or holiday gift-giving treat. For adult visitors, there are literary pub crawls and specialty tasting experiences, including port and chocolate, champagne and shortbread, or absinthe.
Whether stopping for a quick bite between performances or gathering around a table for a longer respite from London’s busy streets, dining is part of the Fair’s immersive holiday experience.
Something for Every Generation
For younger visitors, the Fair offers an introduction to Dickens’ London filled with magic and imagination “beyond the book.”
Children can meet Father Christmas, encounter characters from classic stories such as Alice in Wonderland, enjoy interactive entertainment, explore games and activities, and engage with a theatrical world unfolding around them.
Adults may discover an entirely different Fair where they can meet characters from the pages of history books, speak with artisans while shopping their wares, or partake in the convivial atmosphere of London’s pubs. For a thoroughly “Dickens After Dark” experience of corsets, strong cocktails, and raucous variety shows, adult guests can enrich their visit with a thematic pub crawl or personal corset fitting accompanied by a glass of champagne.
Many longtime patrons first attended as children and now return with children and grandchildren of their own. This generational connection has helped make the Dickens Fair a one-of-a-kind Bay Area holiday tradition.
Created by the Family Who Invented the American Renaissance Faire
The roots of The Great Dickens Christmas Fair stretch back to 1963, when Ron and Phyllis Patterson, along with family, friends, and fellow artists and educators, pioneered the modern Renaissance Faire in America. Expanding their innovations in environmental theatre, they went on to create the elaborate holiday celebration of The Great Dickens Christmas Fair inspired by the stories of Charles Dickens and the visually dramatic world of Victorian London.
Five decades later, Red Barn Productions and the Patterson family continue to evolve this tradition with an enormous community of performers, artisans, merchants, craftspeople, and production staff who meticulously recreate this Dickensian wonderland each holiday season for patrons to enjoy.
The Great Dickens Christmas Fair has made its home at the historic Cow Palace since 2000. What begins each year as vast and vacant exhibition halls is transformed — through the theatrical magic of lighting, decoration, stages, sets, pubs, and thousands of production details — into a lovingly curated environment designed to transport visitors to an imagined 19th century London on Christmas Eve.
The World of Charles Dickens — Brought to Life!
At the heart of The Great Dickens Christmas Fair remains Dickens himself — and the remarkable world he imagined and chronicled.
Visitors may encounter characters and scenes inspired by A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and other works, alongside historical and theatrical characters who evoke the extraordinary cultural life of 19th-century London.
But knowledge of Dickens is hardly a prerequisite to attend. For some visitors the Fair’s appeal is literature and history; for others it’s theatre. For most it is a combination of lively music and dance, spirited song, gourmet food, holiday shopping, and colorful costumes. Or, simply the pleasure of spending a winter's day somewhere completely unexpected!
This unique and special mixture is part of what has allowed this Bay Area original to remain a holiday tradition for generations.
