Francine Maigue To Direct Disney's MOANA JR. At San Diego Junior Theatre

San Diego Junior Theatre, the nation's longest-running youth theatre program, announces the premiere of DISNEY'S MOANA JR, directed and choreographed by Junior Theatre Alumna Francine Maigue. The special pilot production is a partnership with Music Theatre International and Disney Theatrical Group and showcases San Diego performers, musicians and technicians all ranging in age from 8 to 18. MOANA runs March 1-17 at Balboa Park's historic Casa del Prado Theatre. San Diego Junior Theatre is celebrating its 71st season empowering children of all ages, abilities and backgrounds through innovative, engaging and inclusive high-quality theater education and productions.

British conductor Michael Francis is known to San Diego concert goers as the music director of the city's Mainly Mozart Festival. Since taking the job four years ago he has embarked on an ambitious chronological survey of the music of the composer who inspired the festival's name. On this evening he traveled a few blocks north and half a musical century forward to appear as guest conductor of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in a program of works by 'The Young Romantics.' The enthusiastic reaction he received after the performance may increase the chances he will be called on again in future Symphony seasons.

Seraphic Fire Makes West Coast Debut At St James

The Grammy Award-nominated Seraphic Fire, joined by the American Brass Quintet, will make their West Coast debut when they bring their acclaimed program "A Spanish Pilgrimage" to St. James Music Series on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 4 p.m. at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 743 Prospect Street in La Jolla. Conducted by founder and artistic director Patrick Dupre Quigley, the American Brass Quintet and Seraphic Fire explore the rich Spanish tradition of music for voice and brass. Audiences will join a journey across the Camino de Santiago via the music of Victoria, Morales, Guerrero, and a world premiere, "O Antiphons," by Australian-Canadian composer Julian Revie.

Rafael Payare's initial concert as Music Director Designate of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra featured four familiar and easily appreciated pieces, including Mozart's Overture to Don Giovanni and the topically related Don Juan by Richard Strauss. In a different program two nights later Payare repeated only Strauss's tone poem. Its optimism recalled the mood of the earlier concert while its darkness signaled the predominant mood of the revised program. San Diego's new conductor-to-be managed to excite sellout audiences both nights.

This magical production - directed by Desha Crownover and featuring performances from a talented group of young San Diego performers - takes a hilarious romp through the Neverland you never knew. Based on the best-selling novels, this musical adaptation upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan. Wonderful storytelling for the entire family.
