The 2026 Helen Hayes Award nominations have been announced, recognizing outstanding achievement in Washington-area professional theatre. Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, and dozens of regional companies are represented across performance, direction, design, and production categories. The awards highlight the breadth of theatre work presented throughout the D.C. metropolitan area.

FIM Flint Repertory Theatre will present its 2026 New Works Festival from February 13 through February 15 in Flint, Michigan. The three-day festival will feature staged readings of new plays in development.

Submissions are open for Red Bull Theater's 16th Short New Play Festival 2026- Refinished. Six brand new 10-minute plays of heightened language and classic themes inspired by this year’s theme, “Refinished,” will be selected.

Maryland Ensemble Theatre will present Larissa FastHorse’s The Thanksgiving Play from November 7–December 7, 2025, in downtown Frederick, MD. Directed by Suzanne Beal.

Topical and playful, this satirical comedy follows a group of four well-meaning but culturally insensitive white theatre artists as they attempt to create a politically correct elementary school play about the first Thanksgiving.

Dear Readers, what did you want to be when you grew up? Firefighter? Doctor? Lawyer? Bathroom attendant? Dragon? All worthy goals. But how many of us made it there? Currently at the Seattle Rep, in conjunction with Seattle Children’s Theatre, there’s a world premiere play from critically acclaimed playwright Larissa FastHorse, “Fancy Dancer”, that touches on her own struggle with that question. And while sometimes these shows can end up being someone else’s therapy on stage, something I loathe, here she takes us through such a thrilling journey that I didn’t so much mind the exorcising of some demons.

We sat down with playwright Larissa FastHorse and actor Burgandi Trejo Phoenix—who alternate starring in the role of Lara in Fancy Dancer—to chat about working on world premieres, telling your own story, and the importance of community and intergenerational experiences.
