BIO

Award-winning director-choreographer, Peggy Hickey is one of the most versatile artists today, working extensively in television, film, theatre, and opera. Peggy was awarded the MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography for her work on Grammy-Award winner Beck’s The New Pollution.



Peggy had directed and choreographed numerous regional productions including Trouble in Tahiti at Chicago Lyric Opera starring Susan Graham and Nathan Gunn, Elf for Tuacahn Center of the Arts and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder for 3D Theatricals and Tuacahn respectively, to name a few.

Ms. Hickey also choreographed the very successful Encores episodes “Grease” and “Fiddler” for Disney+, starring Kristen Bell, as well as the critically acclaimed movie Woodshock, starring Kirsten Dunst. Other credits include “Spring Awakening” for the hit series 90210 as well as the episode “So I Thought I Could Dance” for Christina Applegate’s series Samantha Who?

Peggy was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Dance Sequence in a Feature Film for her work on the box-office hit, The Brady Bunch Movie (Paramount). Peggy worked as well on the “Nurses’ Ball” episodes on General Hospital for eight consecutive seasons and also on the tongue in cheek “Jail House Tango” for ABC’s Passions.

Equally at home on stage, Peggy has also choreographed for many of the country’s most distinguished theaters. Broadway credits include: Anastasia with productions around the world and ongoing national tours, Best Musical Tony award winning A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, My Fair Lady starring Kelli OHara, Kelsey Grammar and Brian Dennehey, at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic, The Most Happy Fella starring Paul Sorvino for New York City Opera and Lucky to be Me: The Music of Leonard Bernstein also for NYCO. Ms. Hickey collaborated with Monty Python’s Eric Idle on An Evening Without Monty Python which played in both New York and LA.

Peggy was nominated for a Drama Desk and Astaire award for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder Broadway. She is a three-time recipient of the Connecticut Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Choreography for Brigadoon, On the Twentieth Century, and Carnival at the renowned Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. Also for Goodspeed, Peggy has choreographed King of Hearts, A Little Night Music and Amour. Along with Oklahoma! at the Papermill Playhouse, regional credits include The Music Man starring Shirley Jones and Patrick Cassidy for Hartford’s Bushnell Theater, GIGI and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum for LA’s Reprise Theater along with many productions for Music Theater of Wichita, Sacramento Music Circus and Casa Manana.

Peggy also works extensively in opera, and has collaborated with such renowned artists as Placido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Denyce Graves, Susan Graham, and Franco Zeffirelli among others. Her work has been performed at Los Angeles Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Seattle Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Santa Fe Opera, Palm Beach Opera, and the Julliard School, where she choreographed Hansel Und Gretel with sets and costumes by Maurice Sendak which was subsequently televised Live From Lincoln Center on PBS. Internationally, Peggy has traveled to China to choreograph La Cenerentola and Ballo en Maschara for the Hong Kong Arts Festival; and to Finland for Don Giovanni and Salome for the Savonlinna Opera Festival.

On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, I had the excellent opportunity to sit down with Eric Sciotto, Director and Choreographer of Rock of Ages at MTWichita, and Brian J. Marcum, Artistic Director at MTWichita. It was a wide ranging interview, with a very stream of consciousness feel, and they were gracious enough to grant me an hour over a lunch break during rehearsal last Tuesday. The energy was high, and I was able to get some excellent insight into Eric’s choreographic process. I also spoke to Brian about leading MTWichita into a new era.
