Nick Carter began his professional career as a child performer in the late 1980s, appearing in commercials, talent shows and live performances in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area. He made a brief on-screen appearance in the film Edward Scissorhands (1990). Between 1989 and 1993, he recorded demo and performance tracks later released in 2002 on Before the Backstreet Boys 1989–1993. In 1992, he won The New Original Amateur Hour.
In 1993, Carter became a founding member of the Backstreet Boys alongside AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson. The group released multiple albums beginning in the mid-1990s, with the latest being DNA (2019) and the holiday album A Very Backstreet Christmas (2022). In 2016, the group launched the Las Vegas residency Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life.
Carter launched his solo career with the album Now or Never (2002), followed by the singles “Help Me” (2002) and “I Got You” (2002). His second solo album, I’m Taking Off, was released internationally in 2011. He released the duet album Nick & Knight with Jordan Knight in 2014 and his third solo album, All American, in 2015. He released additional solo music throughout the 2020s, including singles in 2023 and 2024, and launched the Who I Am World Tour in 2023.
His acting work includes television appearances on American Dreams (2002) and 8 Simple Rules (2003), and starring roles in the television film The Hollow (2004) and the reality series House of Carters (2006). He appeared in the film Kill Speed (released 2010–2012), guest-starred as himself on 90210 (2012), and appeared with the Backstreet Boys in This Is the End (2013). He also starred in the reality series I Heart Nick Carter (2014) and competed on Dancing with the Stars season 21 (2015), finishing as runner-up.
In 2015, Carter developed and starred in the independent film Dead 7. In 2023, he contributed vocals to the charity recording “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” which earned him a Pacific Southwest Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical Composition & Arrangement in 2024.
