Review: MISS SAIGON at Göteborgs Operan
by Christian Ranke - Oct 21, 2025
For decades, Miss Saigon has occupied contested terrain within the musical theater canon—championed by some as an essential work, scrutinized by others for perpetuating orientalist narratives and reductive stereotypes.

Review: MARIE & ROSETTA, Starring Beverley Knight
by Aliya Al-Hassan - May 12, 2025
Beverley Knight starsBefore Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jimi Hendrix came Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the so-called 'godmother of rock ‘n’ roll’ who you have probably never heard of. Controversially Tharpe took her conservative gospel roots into the nightclubs, playing with Duke Ellington and selling millions of records in the USA and the UK during the 1930s and 40s, yet she ended her life in an unmarked grave.

Review: A TUPPERWARE OF ASHES, National Theatre
by Debbie Gilpin - Oct 3, 2024
'The tempest in my mind doth from my senses take all feeling else, save what beats there. Filial ingratitude!' Queenie Mukherjee has always been the Bengali matriarch to end all Bengali matriarchs, except recently her children have started to notice the odd slip: a burnt pan here, a wrong date there. She can’t see anything wrong, but reluctantly attends a doctor’s appointment anyway - and the resulting diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s proves even harder for her to accept. Only hallucinations of her late husband, Ameet, can provide her with some comfort.

Review: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at Folketeatret
by Christian Ranke - Aug 31, 2024
Folketeateret’s new production of Jesus Christ Superstar set out to offer a fresh take on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s beloved rock opera, but it felt more like a retread of concepts that had become borderline clichés. Most of the lead actors cannot handle Llloyd Webber's score amd the use of live autotune cheapens the experience. The ensemble (and the orhestra) are the only saving grace in this struggling reimagining.
