Review: BARNEY CAREY GETS HIS WINGS at Austin Scottish Rite Theater
by Victoria Schwarz - Feb 22, 2024
It is so delightful to walk into a theater and see chairs moved to the side so children can sit on the floor directly in front of the stage to see a show. Indeed, backing up a bit, it is even more delightful to walk into a theater and see children excited about seeing a show. Despite an increasing array of theater and performing arts camps for young people to attend, live theater meant for children is far less robust. Austin Scottish Rite Theater is one of the Austin theater companies that work diligently to provide consistent and quality theater directly intended for children, and their latest show, BARNEY CAREY GETS HIS WINGS, is a joyful, heartwarming addition.

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company ensemble performers are quick on their feet, perfect in their enunciation, energetic and expressive as they deliver Shakespearean favorite plot elements of upper class people in forests, merriment, witty banter, love triangles, and everyone getting married. The action is fast-paced, the set stunning and immersive.

BWW Review: UP DOWN MAN, Tobacco Factory Theatre
by Tim Wright - Nov 10, 2017
My name is Matty Butler and I like foxes . We're told the reaction to foxes is often similar to people with Down's syndrome like Matty. Some people think they're cute, some think they shouldn't be there. After the success of previous production Up Down Boy, we're back with Matty and his family but this time Matty is not a boy, but a man. Matty may share many of the best child-like qualities but he's now 29 and wants a boyfriend.

In recent times, the company has enjoyed a special relationship with Nathan Bessell- a performer with Down's syndrome who was the star and inspiration for Up Down Boy (which toured and had a stint at the National Theatre) and the upcoming revival of it's sequel Up Down Man.
