Texas Performing Arts' 2010-2011 Season is proud to highlight Mexico's 2010 Bicentennial and Centennial celebrations with performances that emphasize the richness and diversity of Mexican performing arts. Texas Performing Arts' ArtesAméricas program presents a very special evening with early music icon Jordi Savall and an assembly of musicians to present his latest offering of historical world music, Sunday, October 3 at Bates Recital Hall.
For this intimate Bates Recital Hall performance of The Route of the New World: Spain-Mexico, Savall brings together an all-star gathering of players, including his renowned Hespèrion XXI ensemble, vocal ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Mexico's baroque outfit Tembembe Ensamble Continuo, and his wife and long-time musical partner Montserrat Figueras.Recognized as one of the most important performers of ancient music, Jordi Savall is amply one of the most multi-faceted musical personalities of his generation: viol player, conductor, and creator of an unmistakable style, his concerts, pedagogical and research activities place him among the main architects of the present process of revaluation and revival of historical music. He is acknowledged as the worlds most celebrated viola da gamba player, an instrument so refined that it takes the listener to the very brink of silence. With over 100 recordings to his credit, Savall is instrumental in restoring an essential repertoire.Folk and baroque meet in this dialogue between Old Spain, Mexican Baroque and the living Husteca and Jarocho traditions, reflecting African, Spanish and native influences on indigenous Mexican music. With a message of mutual understanding and cultural exchange, Savall brings to life this rich musical heritage with originality and passion.

Join us for a pre-performance lecture with Dr. Lorenzo Candelaria, Associate Professor of Musicology; Sunday, October 3 at 6pm in Bates Recital Studio (MRH 2.608)
Dr. Candelaria is a historian of Western European art music in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. His research focuses on Catholic music in sixteenth-century Spain and its subsequent impact on devotional cultures in Latin America and the southwestern United States.
