New London Maritime Society Announces Upcoming Events At The Custom House
The Custom House Maritime Museum open year-round - telling the stories of New London's waterfront! The Custom House Maritime Museum is always FREE for current members and children under age 18 (with adult). A $5 donation is asked for all others.
May 4 - FIRST TUESDAY Heritage Workshop - What does a Conservator do?
Lance Mayer and Gay Myers are paintings conservators at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, but they spend the majority of their time as independent conservators for many large and small museums, as well as private collectors. Their talk will discuss how paintings are made, how they age, and what a conservator does to keep them in good condition. The talk will be illustrated with many pictures of paintings in various stages of treatment. 6:30 PM. $10, $8 NLMS members.

May 12 (Wednesday) - All Things Oyster Field Trip
See aquaculturist Don Bell's collection of all things Oyster and hear John M. Kochiss, author of Oystering from New York to Boston, on this special oyster excursion. We will take a van or carpool (depending on the number of people) to Mr. Bell's Trumbull home. Lunch at Captain's Cove (Wednesday is $3.99 Fish Fry day). 10 AM to 5 PM. May 20-22 - Amistad: Revolt to Freedom, A three-day celebration of the Amistad story, in partnership with Amistad America, Kente Cultural Center, Provenance Center, & the City of New London.
One event, four venues, three days. Watch the Web site for details.
May 20 (Thursday) - Exhibition opening 'Amistad: A True Story of Freedom'; reception for Amistad America; & presentation by historian James Walvin, University of York: `Why we should remember - and honor - the Amistad'. 6 to 9 PM at the Custom House. Exhibition & talk sponsored by the Connecticut Humanities Council. Opening event sponsored by Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

May 22 (Saturday) - 2nd Annual Chowda' Fest & Silent Auction
in honor of National Maritime Day. Noon to 2:30 PM outside under the Custom House tent.
Tickets $8 in advance - buy them at the Custom House, $10 at the door.
May 23 (Sunday) - Squalus Memorial event. A remembrance of the heroic rescue of the
USS Squalus submarine on the 71st anniversary of its sinking. 2 PM. FREE.
June 5 (Saturday) - Cribbage Fest IV has been canceled.
June 5 (Saturday afternoon) - Parade Parade The City of New London, your Custom House Maritime Museum and other New London civic and arts organizations are joining together to celebrate the opening of the newly redesigned and reinvented Parade in the heart of the city. Join us for this special rededication that culminates in a fireworks display off the roof of the adjacent parking garage!
June 5 (Saturday night) - "Love Is..." Cabaret fundraiser with singer/entertainer Gary Baillargeon.
Music, desserts & wine prepared by Just Desserts, etc. Make your reservation now.
