For some reason it won’t let me link it, but Joe iconis sent out a tweet talking about how he can’t believe the show hasn’t performed Michael in the bathroom on a late night show. Is this type of begging and whinning immature?

They should fire the press agent a second time :)

(And yes, to answer your question, it's immature, but 0% surprising from these kids.)

EDIT: looks like the original post was deleted. It was about a certain flop show griping about not getting to perform on a late-night talk show.

Sorry! I was trying to fix the tweet to be clickable and just ended up erasing everything on accident.

How does this process work? Do they have to be invited by the network? I assume they have to pay for the slot either way.

This thread is pointless because Joe is neither begging or whining in that tweet. He's pointing out a fact.

This board's determination to **** on and completely shut down any legitimacy of Be More Chill as a show is baffling to me. There is zero need to fuel this fire, and continuously beat the show while it is down.

Why this board refuses to accept the younger audience and fanbase of Be More Chill, but act exactly as immaturely and ridiculous as stans of The Prom, I will never understand. If BroadwayWorld hadn't banned all of those extremely active (extremely younger) users, this board would have SOME age diversity still. Instead, we all continue to suffer as an older generation refuses to welcome new types of people into the Broadway fandom.

Honestly this doesn’t even surprise me. I was thinking of going to see Be More Chill before it closes, so I listened to a Billboard on Broadway podcast interviewing the cast/team to hype myself up before buying my ticket. I barely made it 10 minutes into it before having to turn it off. They are all so arrogant that it made me cringe just listening to it.

I got the impression that they (especially Joe Iconis) think they’re the cream-of-the-Broadway-crop just because of their “viral cast recording”. They kept on comparing their show to Rent in terms of quality as well as reception by the audiences... Sweetie, no...

I don't think THAT's immature, but I heard Iconis also threatened to hold his breath until one of those talk shows invites them to appear.  Now that's going a bit too far, don't you think?

I agree that Joe isnt begging for anything. What would the point be?

However, the rest  of your  post is pretty ridiculous.

I think Iconis should drop the bitterness, and channel some of that energy into his other upcoming works. Which, from what I've heard from them, are far better than BMC anyway.

Press agent pitches it to the talent-bookers at the talkshow or  network and they decide. Most of the talent bookers also get invited to every Bway show. It’s ultimately at the discretion of the talkshow. There are some show-related expenses, but the production is not paying the network to perform—it’s press, not advertising. (And the only 3 late night shows that occasionally show Bway performances are the ones in NY: Colbert on CBS, Fallon & Meyers on NBC.)

I believe BMC had multiple morning show TV performances, though, which is still quite good for a show that wasn’t critically lauded.

I love Be More Chill and I'm a huge fan of Joe and what he brings to the musical theatre table. I do think some of the malice the community has given the show is undeserved. But this is the first tweet I've seen from him regarding the show where I think he went too far.

Having your art validated is important, and sometimes it gets ignored by the mainstream, but you don't just go out and say it. Joe Iconis is a brand now, he's gotta act with a little more care. He can't just rant on his public twitter about his personal troubles.

Also, based on how much they had to nerf their songs on their other TV appearances, it's probably a good thing they're not going on cable again. I couldn't handle another butchering of the lyrics.

Listen, I stood up for Joe after the Tonys, but this whole thing comes off whiny and passive-aggressive. Like, why should these talk shows be doing you any favors? You need them more than they need you. And sorry, but it's kind of a long song (or feels that way) to want to put at the end of a late night talk show - at least offer to do a medley or something.

Seems like Corden would be an easy spot to get, after he used the song during the Tony awards for a parody without crediting them...

I feel like Joe and the gang are all very thankful for the success of their show (he's said in a lot of interviews that he knows his stuff isn't the kind of stuff that usually makes it to Broadway). But this feels like he's just grabbing for the mainstream attention he should have realized by now that he doesn't need.

It's not Corden's fault (that's on the Tony producers/writers), and credit isn't required for parody. The production would still have to pay to fly the performers/musicians out to California and put them up for the performance, which is a huge expense; a performance on late-night TV historically doesn't move the needle that much for sales. The Tonys also sent out an email that included it (with proper attribution), the video now has 300K+ youtube views, Corden tweeted about it, and it has received much press/social media attention.

I promise the show would still be closing August 11 even if they had attributed it to Iconis/BMC. These people are owed nothing.

So, you are lamenting how poorly Be More Chill and its fans are treated, while calling fans of The Prom, (which is what i am guessing you meant by 'stans'..?), Immature and Ridiculous...?

Your point would have been better made/received if you didn't do to another shows fans what you are blasting people for doing to Be More Chill..

I believe that they were referring to the fact that many stans of The Prom, when it announced its closure, were lamenting how Be More Chill was still running while The Prom was so much better.

i wish these social media embarrassments could avoid being repeated. if your show is dead, asking people online to come help your show doesn't work. dave malloy did it (differently), the once on this island guy did last year. and even laura benanti commenting on tepid audience reaction at 'she loves me' was in poor taste.

Joe Iconis is a quirky, funny, humble man. He isn’t whining. He is being a human being. People on Twitter are always commenting on being disappointed by life. Why isn’t he allowed? If you don’t like it, don’t read it, but it’s hardly whiny or begging. It’s human. He was hoping his show would be a success and it wasn’t. Is he not allowed to feel bummed out by that? This board’s desire for his failure has become a ridiculous comedy, and it’s remarkably uncalled for. I liked BMC (I’m a middle aged person), but I understand why it is closing and why it didn’t do well. I think we could all stand to be nicer. Just my opinion.

All he did was ask. He has that right. I do think it may have been more effective if they performed back in April or May.
I am curious though which musicals in this past season (2018-2019) performed in a late night show.

I couldn't agree more. I'm on the far side of "middle-aged" and found BMC a lot of fun! But I understand why it won't have a long life on Bway, and why it will flourish elsewhere for years to come.

TV spot?  If it were mine, I'd not waste it on Michael in the Bathroom. That was the least interesting song of the score IMO.

Corden seems like an easy spot, and perhaps they did offer an olive branch post-Tonys, but I'm sure the show would have to pay to fly the cast to LA, and they seem not willing to do that.
