BWW Reviews: Soprano Karita Mattila Shimmers in Strauss's FOUR LAST SONGS at Carnegie HallBWW Reviews: Soprano Karita Mattila Shimmers in Strauss's FOUR LAST SONGS at Carnegie Hall
by Richard Sasanow (Classical - New York City)

(4/16/2014) - Of all the music that Richard Strauss wrote during his long careerand he'd composed almost 60 songs and more than 40 piano works by the time he was 18perhaps none are more gorgeous and moving than his FOUR LAST SONGS (VIER LETZTE LIEDER). Finnish soprano Karita Mattila's performance on Saturday night at Carnegie Hall with the Munich Philharmonic under Fabio Luisi was gleaming and full bodied, and she held the audience in her thrall.

SOUND OFF: GLEE Gets TestedSOUND OFF: GLEE Gets Tested
by Pat Cerasaro

(4/16/2014) - Sex, food and rock n roll was the theme of GLEE's "Tested" - showcasing some tubular 80s tunes ranging from Robert Palmer and Foreigner to Pat Benatar and Janet Jackson, all while explicating the finer points of modern sexuality as it pertains to the characters and viewing audience at large, as well. Reliably timely, GLEE got tested - and passed with flying colors; a rainbow, no doubt.

Glee-Cap: Safety First, Safety Last, Safety AlwaysGlee-Cap: Safety First, Safety Last, Safety Always
by Matt Tamanini

(4/16/2014) - Somehow, I think your normal GLEE-capper, Robert Lawlor, knew this was going to be a down week for GLEE when he asked me to pinch-hit for him (don't worry if you don't know what that means, it's a sports term). While I have been generally quite pleased with the majority of episodes over the last two seasons, this episode felt like a throwback to Season 2 or 3, where far too many episodes felt like simply filler. While they might have ultimately been entertaining, they primarily served as a placeholder until we got to the more plot-specific episodes. With Kurt's attack last week and Rachel's 'Funny Girl' opening a week away, this episode felt disappointingly like a very low-stakes buffer between the two.
