14th Annual African Dance Celebration: 14TH ANNUAL AFRICAN DANCE CELEBRATION: "DANCE & DRUM VOYAGE"
COCA
5/20-5/20/2017
Afriky Lolo, the region's premier professional West African dance company, presents the 14th Annual African Dance Celebration on Saturday, May 20 at 8 p.m. at COCA in University City. Led by Executive and Artistic Director Diadie Bathily, Afriky Lolo, composed of both youth and adult companies, creates a vibrant, larger-than-life production of lively West African dance, powerful drumming, colorful costumes and dazzling lighting design. This year's production, "Dance & Drum Voyage," features a special guest performance by the Saint Louis Osuwa Taiko, the local organization that performs, promotes, teaches and preserves the art of Japanese ensemble drumming. Together with Afriky Lolo’s drummers, the collaborative production explores and elevates the musical art forms of West African and Japanese taiko drumming while highlighting their physical vigor. “Dance & Drum Voyage" spotlights Afriky Lolo’s beautiful West African choreography and pulsating drumming. The 14th Annual African Dance Celebration also features artwork by Nigerian artist and United Nations Arts Ambassador Ibiyinka Alao.

St. Louis Premiere of A Human Being Died That Night in Broadway ST. LOUIS PREMIERE OF A HUMAN BEING DIED THAT NIGHT
Kranzberg Arts Center
5/12-5/28/2017
Upstream Theater explores themes of overcoming division with the St. Louis Premiere of Nicholas Wright’s A HUMAN BEING DIED THAT NIGHT, based on the bestselling book by South African psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, about her real-life interviews of Eugene de Kock, a South African government sanctioned political assassin, nick-named "Prime Evil" for his crimes against anti-apartheid activists. During the 1990s, psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela interviewed Eugene de Kock, commanding officer of the South African government's death squad stationed at Vlakplaas--a man who had ordered and carried out the torture and murder of dozens of anti-apartheid activists, earning the nickname “Prime Evil.” De Kock was serving a 212-year prison sentence for crimes against humanity.
