Now Playing Onstage in San Francisco - Week of 1/26/2014 VICTOR/VICTORIA
6th Street Playhouse, GK Hardt Theatre
We know we're in Paris, but is this persona he or a she? A man or a woman? What confusion, what fun! VICTOR/VICTORIA is an appealing, sophisticated show based on the movie about the career of the Paris entertainer Victoria Grant, who becomes a star female impersonator, only to fall in love at first sight with macho King Marchan. Musical numbers include Le Jazz Hot, You and Me, Almost a Love Song, Trust Me, Living in The Shadows, Paris by Night, and Crazy World. Life's complications are both hilarious and touching.

Now Playing Onstage in San Francisco - Week of 1/26/2014 MAJOR BARBARA
American Conservatory Theater
A.C.T. continues its tradition of presenting brilliantly reimagined classic works with a sumptuous production of Shaw's great political comedy Major Barbara. In this intriguing tangle of religion and business, a Salvation Army officer becomes disillusioned when her church accepts money from a whiskey distiller and armaments manufacturer-her own father. If the price of supporting the poor is complicity with the country's most successful gun factory, what is Barbara to do? As it explores timely themes of business, faith, family, and morality, Major Barbara remains one of Shaw's most topical and richly invigorating works. Coproduced with one of A.C.T.'s favorite Canadian collaborators, the show will be directed by Theatre Calgary Artistic Director Dennis Garnhum, featuring an international cast of both Canadian and American actors.

Now Playing Onstage in San Francisco - Week of 1/26/2014 DATE NIGHT
6th Street Playhouse, Studio Theatre
Robert Caisley's work once again graces the stage at the 6th Street Playhouse. After last season's highly acclaimed production of HAPPY, Mr. Caisley strikes back and this time at our hearts - offering an evening of comedies focused on love and romance just in time for V-Day! Made up of three separate works, the evening starts with Robert's one-man play, THE APOLOGY , in which a love struck buffoon tries to make things right with the woman he spent the world's worst date with the night before. Second on the ticket is a hilarious and sexy romp called HUNGRY 4 U following the story of newlyweds, Mark and Phoebe, who love each other so much they almost devour one another. Rounding out this evening is a beautiful and fun play called KISSING, which examines what happens to us when we have no more words to express our love, leading us to the impulse to kiss - and how significant a kiss can be. An evening for couples for sure, but a great time for everyone who loves a good romantic comedy night out!

Now Playing Onstage in San Francisco - Week of 1/26/2014 UBU ROI
The Cutting Ball Theater
When Alfred Jarry's UBU ROI premiered in Paris on December 10, 1896, the audience broke into a riot at the utterance of its first word. Jarry's parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth defies theatrical tradition through its scatological language and disregard for audience expectations, replacing Shakespeare's tragic hero with a greedy, sadistic, obscene ogre who becomes the king of Poland by force and through the debasement of his people. UBU ROI retains its relevance and may bring to mind the fall from grace of many a contemporary political leader corrupted by power, from Elliot Spitzer to Dominque Strauss-Kahn. Russian director Yury Urnov (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company) helms this irreverent take on world leaders that ushered in a century of avant-garde drama. UBU ROI was developed as part of the 2012 edition of RISK IS THIS… The Cutting Ball New Experimental Plays Festival.
