Peterborough Players to Screen Met Opera's ELEKTRAPeterborough Players to Screen Met Opera's ELEKTRA
by BWW News Desk - Apr 26, 2016

Shortly after conquering the opera world with his scandalous masterpiece Salome, Richard Strauss turned to Hugo von Hofmannsthal's recent adaptation of Sophocles's Electra for his next project. The resulting opera is an intense and still-startling work that unites the commanding impact of Greek tragedy with the unsettling insights of early-20th-century Freudian psychology. The drama unfolds in a single act of rare vocal and orchestral power. (more...)

BWW Review: Unusually Bold and Engrossing FATHER COMES HOME FROM THE WARS by Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright at the TaperBWW Review: Unusually Bold and Engrossing FATHER COMES HOME FROM THE WARS by Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright at the Taper
by Don Grigware - Apr 25, 2016

Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks has the uncanny ability to get under your skin and really make you feel the turmoil and misery of the black soul. In her latest play, now onstage at the Mark Taper Forum through May 15 entitled Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2, & 3), Parks takes the audience back to 1862 and the slave involvement in the Civil War starting with the anticipation and fear of going off to war, then witnessing the horrors of the actual war itself, and the aftermath for returning soldiers and their families. Under the sturdy hand of director Jo Bonney, the cast is amazing... and the play is mostly fascinating to watch, mainly because Parks' style does not repeat itself from part to part. (more...)

Pacific Symphony to Perform Vivaldi FOUR SEASONS in Concert, 5/19Pacific Symphony to Perform Vivaldi FOUR SEASONS in Concert, 5/19
by BWW News Desk - Apr 23, 2016

Orange County, Calif.—April 21, 2016—Two all-time favorite pieces of music provide a feast for the ears, while stimulating imaginations with their vivid, arresting beauty, when Pacific Symphony performs one of the most beloved works of the Baroque repertoire and then takes a stunning excursion through the Alps. First, Vivaldi's lyrical masterpiece “The Four Seasons,” which paints tantalizing pictures of the changing seasons, is performed and led by award-winning Russian-American violinist Philippe Quint. Revel in the celebration of the autumn harvest, the warmth of the winter fire and the languor of the summer sun as Vivaldi's Venetian tour de force unleashes all of the drama and splendor of the Baroque period and the lyrical beauty of the strings. Then, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, the Symphony retraces the majestic, musical depiction of a dawn-to-dusk hike up and down the Bavarian Alps, as brought to life by Richard Strauss' lush, splendid musical descriptions in his “An Alpine Symphony.”  (more...)

Orange County, Calif.—April 18, 2016—So civilized! Sip coffee or tea and sample sweet treats in a coffeehouse-style setting, while enjoying the aural beauty composed by four masters of classical music—Vivaldi, Bach, Holst and Mozart—during Pacific Symphony's final Café Ludwig chamber concert of the 2015-16 season. “Café Concertos,” hosted by the incomparable pianist Orli Shaham, offers the perfect way to celebrate Mother's Day—with a delightful program of concerted works performed as intimate chamber music. Opening with the great composers Bach and Vivaldi followed by works of Mozart and the 20th-century composer Gustav Holst, who were admirers of the Baroque masters, this program spotlights the talent of an impressive cast of Symphony musicians: Jessica Pearlman-Fields, oboe; Ted Sugata, oboe; Benjamin Smolen, flute; Raymond Kobler, violin; Paul Manaster, violin; Nancy Eldridge, violin; Bridget Dolkas, violin; Robert Becker, viola; Timothy Landauer, cello; and Steven Edelman, bass.
