Working Theater, the Off-Broadway company that in 2013 staged a production (about undocumented workers crossing the border to find work in this country) in the confines of an actual 48' trailer truck, will once again shed a unique light on a group of individuals rarely portrayed on stage. Under the direction of Artistic Producing Director Mark Plesent, the company will present THE BLOCK - a new play about community in the Bronx - which is no longer burning, but where life on the streets is as brutal as ever. The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., moves beyond its historic Chelsea home to present groundbreaking performances in intimate spaces through Joyce Unleashed, a series of experimental work presented off-site. One of Finland's most talented young choreographers, Elina Pirinen will make her U.S. debut with her award-winning trio, Personal Symphonic Moment, performed at New York Live Arts (May 31-June 1). Brooklyn-based artist Anna Sperber's latest creation, Prize, will also be performed at New York Live Arts (June 3 & 4). Performance-based artist Vanessa Anspaugh will present The End of Men; An Ode to Ocean at Abrons Arts Center (June 8-11). Both Pirinen and Anspaugh are making their Joyce debut. (more...)

Sundance Institute today announced the acting company, dramaturgs and creative advisors participating in its pilot Theatre Lab in the MENA region, including Sandra Oh, Hoon Lee, Deanna Dunagan, Hala Omran and Raeda Taha. The Lab, held in Morocco next month, is part of the Institute's international cultural exchange programs for independent artists and will kick off a new, multi-year commitment to support artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). For the Lab, the Institute will provide promising, fresh voices from the U.S. and MENA region with a rigorous artistic retreat and new opportunities for cross-cultural discovery, artistic reflection and creative experimentation. On stage, a very promising triad of stripper poles to set the scene where we meet the camp and cavalier characters. The body confident Bev, a perfect fit for Melinda Ryan who drove every moment home, is finding her way toward a loving relationship. Trisha, enthusiastically played by Hayley Flowers, is finding her way toward a more loving relationship with herself. Faith is the blossoming virgin given every ounce of silly sweetness by Kaitlin DeLacy, while the crass Rita seeks an escape from her abusive home, played by Wendy Winkler. Rounding out the group is the older Sarah, who is revealed to be handling a relapse of breast cancer, Jeannie Gee giving the highlight performance of the piece as a complete natural. Shaping and narrating the action is their unconventional pole teacher Gabby. Together they attempt to raise funds in a pole performance for breast cancer research, and discover a lot about each other and themselves along the way. (more...)
