Rehearsals have started for "Girlfriend" at the Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre. Featuring a book by Todd Almond and music and lyrics by Matthew Sweet, the rock musical about first love will begin previews on July 12 with the opening slated for July 19. Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater will soon present Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect, The Book of Mormon) in the original world-premiere musical debuting this summer. The production, by Tony Award-nominated composing duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dogfight; A Christmas Story, The Musical) and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning playwright Steven Levenson(Masters of Sex), is directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (If/Then, Next to Normal, Rent) and will run July 10-August 23, 2015 in the Kreeger Theater. Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera has a concept, book and lyrics by Elizabeth Searle, music by Michael Teoli, and will be directed by David Alpert (If/ Then), with musical direction by Henry Aronson (Rock of Ages), and choreography by Marc Kimelman (A Bronx Tale). The Board of Directors of The Music Center announced today that Rachel S. Moore, an accomplished leader in the performing arts, has been named president and CEO of The Music Center. Moore joins The Music Center from American Ballet Theatre (ABT), one of the world's great dance companies, where she served as CEO since 2012 and as its executive director since 2004. Moore comes from the performing arts, having danced with ABT as a member of its corps de ballet 1984-1988. She will assume her new position with The Music Center on October 5, 2015. (more...)

Starring Ann Noble (The Goat or, Who Is Sylvia?), Stanley Ann will play two preview performances on July 7 and 8 at 8pm and opening is set for Thursday, July 9 at 8pm at the Center's Davidson/Valentini Theatre.
