BIO
Danny DeVito began his acting career on stage, appearing in the off-Broadway productions Shoot Anything With Hair That Moves and The Man with the Flower in His Mouth (1969). After making his film debut in Dreams of Glass (1970), he appeared in Lady Liberty (1971), Hurry Up, or I'll Be 30 (1973), Deadly Hero (1975), and reprised his stage role as Martini in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975).
DeVito rose to prominence as Louie De Palma on the television series Taxi (1978–1983), earning Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his performance. He subsequently established a successful film career with roles in Terms of Endearment (1983), Johnny Dangerously (1984), Romancing the Stone (1984), The Jewel of the Nile (1985), Ruthless People (1986), Tin Men (1987), Twins (1988), Other People's Money (1991), Batman Returns (1992), Jack the Bear (1993), and Junior (1994).
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, DeVito appeared in films including Get Shorty (1995), Space Jam (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), The Rainmaker (1997), L.A. Confidential (1997), Living Out Loud (1998), The Big Kahuna (1999), The Virgin Suicides (1999), Drowning Mona (2000), Screwed (2000), Heist (2001), What's the Worst That Could Happen? (2001), Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), Big Fish (2003), Anything Else (2003), and Be Cool (2005). His voice acting credits include My Little Pony: The Movie (1986), Hercules (1997), The Lorax (2012), Smallfoot (2018), The One and Only Ivan (2020), and Migration (2023).
On television, DeVito joined the cast of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2006 as Frank Reynolds, a role he continues to play. Other television credits include guest appearances on Friends (2004), The Simpsons (1991, 1992, 2013), and The Kominsky Method (2018). He also appeared in When in Rome (2010), Dumbo (2019), Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), The Survivor (2021), Haunted Mansion (2023), and Poolman (2023).
His stage work includes a West End revival of The Sunshine Boys (2012) and his Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's The Price (2017), for which he received a Tony Award nomination. He returned to Broadway in Theresa Rebeck's I Need That (2023).
As a director, DeVito made his feature directorial debut with Throw Momma from the Train (1987), in which he also starred. His directing credits include The Ratings Game (1984), The War of the Roses (1989), Hoffa (1992), Matilda (1996), Death to Smoochy (2002), and Duplex (2003). He has also directed several short films, including The Sound Sleeper (1973), Minestrone (1975), Oh Those Lips (2010), Evil Eye (2010), Poison Tongue (2011), Skin Deep (2011), Nest of Vipers (2011), and Curmudgeons (2016).
As a producer, DeVito founded Jersey Films in 1991. Through the company, he produced projects including Hoffa (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Get Shorty (1995), Gattaca (1997), Erin Brockovich (2000), and Garden State (2004). He also produced the television series Reno 911! and its related film and revival projects. He later launched Jersey Films 2nd Avenue with his children, producing the animated series Little Demon and the feature film Drag (2026).
