Wild About Harry - Why Connick Jr Lights Up AMERICAN IDOL!
Of course we always knew that Broadway vet, and Grammy and Emmy Award winner Harry Connick Jr. was a smart, multi-talented, hilarious personality who possesses a solid musical background to boot, but now that the star has made his debut on the judge's panel of Season 13 of FOX's AMERICAN IDOL, the rest of America knows it too!
Unlike past judges who have appeared on the competition, the music legend is approaching his job with high expectations, yet at the same time, displays honesty and fairness while offering solid advice to the hopeful performers. On top of that, he's not afraid to show his quirky, often goofy side.
By only the second night of the competition, Connick, Jr. had already earned three nicknames. Called "Harsh Harry" in the premiere episode, fellow judge Jennifer Lopez dubbed him "Hatchet Harry" and "Dr. No" by the end of last night's Part 2 broadcast.
While it's true the singer appears to give harsh criticism and is often the only dissenting opinion on the three-person panel, it's clear that his intentions are pure, marking a sharp contrast from past Idol judges such as Simon Cowell and Nicki Minaj, whose criticisms were often hurtful and malicious.
Finally, the 'Pajama Game' star is nothing else if not humble. The show made a running joke of the fact that many of the younger contestants weren't even sure who Connick Jr. was, with one even asking 'who dat?' On night one of the competition, when a star-struck female contestant gushed, 'I've never been this close to celebrities before,' Harry looked over at his two co-judges and gasped, "Either have I!"
