Double amputee and Paralympic champ Amy Purdy spoke to People today about the chances that she will be able to return to the current season of ABC's DANCING WITH THE STARS following a severe back injury on Monday night's show.
Just after the 34-year-old athlete and her professional dance partner Derek Hough performed their rumba routine on Monday night's show, she experienced a pain in her back so sharp that it became painful to breathe. "I turned my head and my upper back popped, which put my muscles on the right side in spasm," she told People. "I barely made it through scoring without passing out."
Now recuperating at home, the champion snowboarder says she's "being very proactive, icing all day, taking anti-inflammatories and working with a sports doctor to try to heal quickly so I can learn this week's dances."
It will not be known until later today whether or not Purdy, one of only five celebrities left in the 18th season of the dance show competition, will be able to resume rehearsals and appear in next Monday's show.
