CENTER STAGE Powered By Grammy Amplifier: Winners Announced In Austin

A catalyst for music innovation and artist development in the digital era, CENTER STAGE Powered By GRAMMY Amplifier is the first-ever program uniting emerging artists with GRAMMY-Award-winners to mentor their career. The three winners for the first-round of CENTER STAGE were announced last night at the Sound Cloud party during music week in Austin. Gentleman Hall, Philip Magnus Hartley and Barnaby Saints, who also performed live at the announcement party (listen below), will receive a recording session with a leading GRAMMY producer, a music video production with a noted director/producer or an opening act performance slot on a major tour or music festival.

Mike Shinoda, member of two-time GRAMMY-winning band Linkin Park and GRAMMY ambassador, served as curator for the first-round of CENTER STAGE, the online platform that provides professional mentoring and exposure for undiscovered musicians through The GRAMMYS' visionary GRAMMY Amplifier program. CENTER STAGE was developed on the success of GRAMMY Amplifier which was launched by The Recording Academy in January. It allows musicians to share their tracks via SoundCloud for a chance to have their music shared on-line by a panel of music icons. CENTER STAGE curators then select talent based on criteria including "amplification" (shares/likes) and individually award them with once-in-a lifetime mentoring opportunities. "We were overwhelmed, not only by the amount of artists' submissions, but the level of talent that is still to be discovered," said Evan Greene, Chief Marketing Officer for The Recording Academy. "We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Hyundai in documenting these artists during their creative process."

As part of a three-year partnership as the "Official Vehicle Partner" of the GRAMMY Awards Hyundai teamed with The Recording Academy to create CENTER STAGE. After music week in Austin, Hyundai will follow all three CENTER STAGE artists as they expand their musical aspirations whether in the studio, making a music video or performing on stage. This exclusive CENTER STAGE content series will launch in April 2013.

Barnaby Saints is a Los Angeles-based band, started by singer-songwriter Erich Lennig. The group mix bluegrass, gospel and indie rock over layered harmonies. Their songs fuse old-folk story-telling with lush vocals, banjo, fiddle, dobro and swelling B3 organ to create a unique soundscape. After recording their debut EP in June 2011, they've garnered positive reviews, chosen as one of the "Bands On the Rise" at the New York New Music Festival 2012. Gentleman Hall who fuse high-handed anthemic choruses of the Killers and the retro synth melodies of MGMT along with a dash of wildman flutist antics, have established themselves as one of the most talked about bands to emerge from Boston in recent years. After winning numerous accolades such as MTV's Best Breakout Band in 2009 and Boston's "Best Act" in 2011, the band was won Billboard's "Battle of the Bands" and made history being the first independent band to perform on the Billboard Music Awards in 2011. In September 2011 they released their debut EP When We All Disappear to critical acclaim and toured nationally throughout 2012. Phillip Magnus Hartley
Phillip Magnus Hartley is a hybrid Artist from Baltimore, MD. He is influenced by all genres of music. Drawing inspiration from Janelle Monae, Brandy, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Kenna, Phillip's stage performance is like no other. By combining street style with fine art, he provides a unique style that matches his refreshing spin on pop and R&B. Performing alongside a band, background singers, and dancers, Phillip's live performance draws on his background in fashion design and costuming.
