Battleme Releases 'Weight on the Brain' EP
Battleme released his brand new EP - Weight On The Brain - on October 8th via a newly inked deal with El Camino Records. The EP features four new songs culled from the forthcoming full-length studio album - Future Runs Magnetic - that is due out early next year and was produced by Doug Boehm (Girls, Guided by Voices). The band followed up the EP release by hitting the road last week, kicking things off in Everett, WA on Friday the 11th and joining up with Metric for a few dates including tonight's hometown show at the Roseland Theatre in Portland.
Battleme is the inner psyche and stage moniker of songwriter Matt Drenik. Originally from Austin, TX and now based in Portland, OR, Drenik started his musical journey with Austin based band Lions before deciding to start Battleme in 2009 after a life altering event caused him to reevaluate things and rediscover his love of music. A year later he found himself living in Portland, OR and writing more than 40 new songs. These eventually were whittled down to 11, recorded with his good friend Thomas Turner from Ghostland Observatory and released via Turner's label Trashy Moped Records on April, 24th 2012. The album received raves, "Battleme is a new, groove-oriented project and a breath of fresh air," wrote The Atlantic and MTV Buzzworthy premiered the video for "Touch" calling it "...upbeat and edgy, all tightly strummed electric guitars and soaring falsetto as the rhythm section does its best LCD Soundsystem."
Following the release, Battleme hit the road kicking things off at the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle. KEXP were early supporters of the record and invited Battleme into the studio to record a session. The band stayed busy, playing MusicFest NorthWest in Portland alongside Passion Pit, Girl Talk, and A-Trak followed by Fall West Coast headlining dates. In November his song "Lights," co-written with The Forest Rangers for FX's hit show Sons of Anarchy, got picked by Entertainment Weekly as one of the "best music moments from recent episodes of your favorite shows" in their "TV THAT ROCKS" column. Always pushing forward, Drenik ended the year writing Future Runs Magnetic and when it came time to record the new album, Drenik enlisted the help of fellow musicians and Portland natives Eric Johnston (bass), Zach Richards (drums) and Evan Railton (Synths) along with producer Doug Boehm to help him evolve a broader sound for the new material. They tracked most of the album's songs live in Portland and Los Angeles shortly after Battleme's SXSW performances.
The four songs selected from the album for the new Weight on the Brain EP include the psychedelic rocker "Just Weight." Reminiscent of the Flaming Lips, the song's accompanying music video is an end-of-the-world adventure that starts off on an old school bus and was just premiered by Filter. In addition, the band just got back to Portland after playing at this year's Austin City Limits and immediately hit the road, playing a number of headlining shows as well as joining up with Metric for a few nights.
