Julie Taymor Reveals Imaginative Unused Ideas For THE LION KING, Plus SPIDER-MAN & More

Julie Taymor Reveals Imaginative Unused Ideas For THE LION KING, Plus SPIDER-MAN & MoreInternationally acclaimed stage and screen director Julie Taymor opens up about her work on the smash hit Broadway adaptation of iconic Disney animated movie musical THE LION KING and more as part of a new interview.

Reflecting on her initial ideas for the piece, many of which never made it beyond the planning stage, Taymor recounts, "Tom [Schumacher] couldn't see how it could work on a conventional Broadway stage. One of my early ideas was to do it at a planetarium, so we could surround the audience, but Michael Eisner wanted a theatrical show... So I set out to figure out how to do it."

Taymor also vividly recalls, "I had this really awful idea to construct Pride Rock. It would be like a giant wedding cake, with different levels of revolves inside of other revolves. I threw that out pretty quickly."

Additionally, Taymor compares the relatively harmonious experience on THE LION KING to that of the troubled SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK, relaying, "No big crisis in the newspapers, no flogging and public accusations... Just people making a piece of theatre."
