Big Bad Paycheck! Johnny Depp Nabs $1 Million As The Wolf In INTO THE WOODS Movie
Internationally adored major movie star Johnny Depp took a major pay-cut to re-team with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES collaborator, director Rob Marshall, on the forthcoming big screen edition of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's fairy tale-themed musical INTO THE WOODS according to a new report.
While these days Depp usually commands a cool $20 million per picture for a headlining role, the singing star took the INTO THE WOODS assignment for a mere $1 million for his week of work on the ensemble film, now in post-production and set for a Christmas release.
Perhaps, was the chance to sing the music and lyrics of master composer/lyricist Sondheim too tempting to refuse for the star of Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, directed by Tim Burton, for which Depp received a 2008 Best Actor Academy Award nomination for his efforts? Not unlikely!
Furthermore, the $40 million-budgeted Disney production also features a number of other major marquee names who shall certainly help in shouldering the promotional load of the tentpole release - Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine among them.

So, was Johnny Depp worth the price-tag given what we saw and heard from his previous Sondheim work in SWEENEY TODD? We will have to wait until Christmas to know for sure!
