Swarovski Presents PROLOGUE, by Fredrikson Stallard for Art Basel in Hong Kong
Swarovski is pleased to present 'Prologue', a new installation created by Fredrikson Stallard for Art Basel in Hong Kong, unveiled at PMQ (the former Hollywood Road Police Married Quarters) on May 13 2014.
The latest collaboration between the crystal house and the acclaimed London-based designers, 'Prologue' is a giant outdoor sculpture which mimics the iconography of the sun, shimmering as it constantly reflects and refracts light.
Visitors entering the courtyard of the listed heritage site in Hong Kong's central district will instantly be drawn to its monumental circular metal form, which stands 4m in height, holding over 8,000 golden Swarovski crystal droplets within its frame.
The pure simplicity of 'Prologue's' luminous ring is compelling and draws the viewer closer, allowing us to feel a primeval connection with the sun. The work will play with natural light by transforming and transmuting its environment throughout the day. It is a bold and confident representation of new beginnings - and also a more abstract symbol of life and rebirth.
Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board, commented: "Fredrikson Stallard are amongst the most talented designers working today and their work is always highly impactful and very beautiful. 'Prologue' is a bold and confident symbol of life and rebirth. But it is also a symbol of change and mutability: just as night follows day, nothing remains the same."
Fredrikson Stallard commented: "Our work with Swarovski is based on a shared understanding of concept, material and form.'Prologue' explores this with the pure simplicity of its circular structure, allowing us to feel a primeval connection with the sun, with life and with new beginnings. 'Prologue's' juxtaposition of heavy, raw, industrial steel with the sparkling luminosity of precision cut crystal is the latest installment in the story of our collaborative vision."
Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard formed their design partnership in 1995 and have become internationally recognized as leading exponents of British avant-garde design. They are admired for their ability to translate their vision into simple yet emotionally engaging furniture and product designs.
'Prologue' by Fredrikson Stallard for Swarovski is the latest collaborative work between Swarovski and the designers, and is the first time both parties have presented their work in Hong Kong. Following Art Basel, Hong Kong 'Prologue' will travel to Design Miami, Basel
