UPDATE: JERSEY BOYS Film Opens w/ Disappointing $13.5 M at Box Office

Over the weekend, BWW reported that Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys film, which opened in nearly 3,000 theaters, was projected to gross between $14.5 and $13.5 million over the weeekend. Today, Deadline.com confirms that the film has taken in a disappointing $13.5M for Warner Bros. performing even worse than expected.

The movie, based on the hit Tony Award winning Broadway musical skewed towards a much older audience than expected and opened in the No. 4 spot. The studio now faces criticism over its decision to debut the film during the summer months.

"We positioned the movie to take advantage of the counter-programming through the summer," explains Warner Bros. distribution head Dan Fellman. "Most of the films in the marketplace were popcorn films. We had an R-rated musical, and we knew the film was going to play older and, if you look at it, 71% of the audience over 50 gave it an A but so did the over 25 year olds. I could have platformed it and gotten decent reviews but this is not what this was. We wanted to get a mainstream audience from coast to coast and we needed to get good word of mouth so I think it will end up in a very good place. This is a marathon not a sprint. We always knew that it would be challenged in the heart of the summer, and it was a risk worth taking. I think our mid-week days will be strong, maybe $1M a night, and we'll end up in a good place."

The film was produced with a budget of approximately $38M.
