Rolin Jones Reveals New Details On AMERICAN IDIOT Film! Plus, THESE PAPER BULLETS News
Playwright Rolin Jones reveals new details on the forthcoming feature film adaptation of AMERICAN IDIOT as part of a new interview as well as discusses his new onstage collaboration with Green Day frontman and multi-award-winning songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong on the Yale Rep's new musical THESE PAPER BULLETS.
Shedding some light on the big screen version of AMERICAN IDIOT, Jones reveals, "The idea is to get it a little dirtier and a little nastier and translate it into visual terms."
Jones adds that he is currently finishing the script for the new film and planning to hand it in to the studio by the end of March.
"There's not going to be a lot of dialogue and it probably should be a little shorter, too," Jones says of the differences between the stage and screen iterations of the rock tuner as he envisons them in translating the property from one medium to another.
"After that, it just takes it's 'movie time' in getting done," Jones concludes.
Furthermore, Jones adds of the advantages of coming from theatre when writing for TV and film, "I found out very quickly that I had an advantage coming from the theater in writing for television that other people didn't have. [For cable series, the studios] want people who can write really great scenes, not necessarily great plays, that's the thing. But playwrights can do that, too, so they have a competitive advantage, plus they've also worked with actors and directors."
Currently, though, Jones and Armstrong are busy with the Shakespeare MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING adaptation titled THESE PAPER BULLETS, set to run through April 5, which features eight new songs by Armstrong.
The official description of THESE PAPER BULLETS is as follows: "Meet the Quartos. Ben (David Wilson Barnes), Claude (Bryan Fenkart), Balth (Lucas Papaelias), and Pedro (James Barry). Their fans worship them. Scotland Yard fears them. And their former drummer will stop at nothing to destroy them. Can these fab four from Liverpool find true love in London and cut an album in seven nights? THESE PAPER BULLETS! is a modish ripoff of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing with a serious backbeat. Adapted by Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award nominated writer Rolin Jones (Friday Night Lights, Weeds) and featuring new songs by Grammy Award winning Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who wrote the Tony Award winning musical American Idiot, THESE PAPER BULLETS! is directed by Jackson Gay, who staged Jones's The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow at Yale Rep in 2004."
