Maria Conchita Alonzo Resigns From VAGINA MONOLOGUES After Tea Party Endorsement
Recognizable screen performer and onetime KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN on Broadway headliner, Maria Conchita Alonzo has withdrawn from an upcoming regional production of acclaimed ensemble play THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES by Eve Ensler following a firestorm of controversy over her public endorsement of an anti-immigration Tea Party candidate.
Alonzo appears along with her dog, Tequila, in a political advertisement for radical Republican and Tea Party member Assemblyman Tim Donnelly of San Bernardino County, California, who is currently seeking a Republican nomination for California Governor.
Of note, Donnelly is reportedly virulently anti-immigration and has been previously affiliated with the Minutemen Project, which once patrolled the Mexican border.
Eliana Lopez, the director of the upcoming Spanish-language production of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, which is set for a February run, explained Alonzo's exit from the production yesterday, stating, "We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately."
Furthermore, Lopez said, "Of course she has the right to say whatever she wants. But we're in the middle of the Mission. Doing what she is doing is against what we believe."

So, do you think a performer's public political opinions should affect their affiliation with a production, regional or otherwise?
