Kendrick Cracks Billboard Top 10 With PITCH PERFECT's 'Cups'
PITCH PERFECT star Anna Kendrick not only is quickly on her way to conquering Broadway and Hollywood as a Tony and Academy Award nominee, but she now can claim to be a chart-topper as well in the music world - the single version of her unforgettable "Cups" from the movie musical PITCH PERFECT has now cracked the Billboard Hot 100.
"Cups" comes in at #10 on the charts just released for this last week, while the PITCH PERFECT ear-worm also appears on the Top iTunes tracks, at #10, as well - down two spots from its placement last week at #8, but still a remarkable achievement in any event.
Certainly, the cover single has shown considerable legs, having been climbing up the charts for months since it was officially released on March 26 - though it is officially considered to have been included on the charts as far back as 28 weeks, peaking with its appearance now in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Yet, could it climb even higher still next week? We will have to wait to see - and hear!
Of note, "Cups (You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone)" was originally recorded by Lulu and The Lampshades. To date, the PITCH PERFECT cover has sold over 1.4 million copies.
More information on the preparation of the single release of "Cups" is available in a previous article on the matter here.
A song from a movie musical or Broadway show cracking the Top 10 - or even Top 100 - is one of the rarest occurrences imaginable as far as the music business and its precarious relationship to theatre and film music is generally concerned, so this is certainly yet another boon for the ongoing movie musical revolution begun with MOULIN ROUGE and CHICAGO and continuing on with HAIRSPRAY, SWEENEY TODD and also mega-hit LES MISERABLES just last year.
Of course, many upcoming, high profile projects are on the horizon, as well - among them, Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp in INTO THE WOODS and Kendrick herself alongside Jeremy Jordan in the big screen adaptation of Jason Robert Brown's THE LAST FIVE YEARS.
Additionally, a boost could have also been given to the single in recent weeks by the HBO premiere of PITCH PERFECT on the cable channel as well as a recent live performance by the cast at the MTV Movie Awards, as well as an increased awareness provided by the March release (which differs in its instrumentation from that of the soundtrack and actual film version performed a capella by Kendrick).
