In Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene, we have the season's only two performers that consistently gave credible, entertaining performances, and also had a professional command of the stage. As you would expect these two heavyweights delivered a knockout of a competition finale. While I always hate the recycled song choices, and don't get me started on the generally nauseating coronation songs, this was a very enjoyable way to close the competition part of the season. With book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease will be directed by Daniel Goldstein with original choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter. Additional songs are by John Farrar, Barry Gibb, Scott Simon and Louis St. Louis. Grease will play the Millburn, New Jersey, theater from May 28 through June 29, 2014. MISS SAIGON will make its highly anticipated return to the West End tonight, May 21, 2014 at the Prince Edward Theatre, in the musical's 25th anniversary year. In a recent interview with the Telegraph, producer Cameron Mackintosh admits to regrets from the original production. Miss Saigon sparked quite a controversy back when it opened on Broadway in 1991, when Jonathan Pryce was cast as the Engineer, a character of Eurasian decent. Mackintosh now admits that it was his 'biggest mistake.' He told Telegraph: 'I said it was a storm in an Oriental tea-cup, thinking I was being clever. I was actually being stupid." (more...)
