SMASH's Debra Messing To Star in CBS Comedy PilotEmmy Award-winning WILL & GRACE and THE STARTER WIFE star Debra Messing has signed on to topline a new CBS comedy, set to shoot in time for this year's upcoming pilot season.

Messing, currently the star of NBC's musical drama series SMASH, joins executive producers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky as an exectutive producer of the as-yet-untitled multi-camera series.

The sitcom, based on a hit Israeli series, centers around a married mother of three who is also a ghostwriter for a famous celebrity chef.

No further casting has been announced at this time.

With Messing moving on to this new endeavor, potentially set to go to series next season should CBS be satisfied, it seems to confirm what many have suspected: that the second season of SMASH may be its last - or at least its last with Messing in a leading role. The troubled series has just been moved from Tuesdays to Saturdays, in addition.

Messing famously appeared onstage in Tony Kushner's original workshop production of ANGELS IN AMERICA: PERESTROIKA in addition to her work Off Broadway in the Donald Marguiles play COLLECTED STORIES.
