Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/02/2014 OKLAHOMA!
Albuquerque Academy
2/28-3/8/2014
Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!Music by Rodgers, Richard; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Original Dances by Agnes de Mille; Based on the play `Green Grow the Lilacs` by Lynn Riggs

Outpost Performance Space
3/9-3/9/2014
Internationally acclaimed American singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins' talent and emotional honesty makes her one of those rare singers whose voice drips with soul and raw emotion, imbued with a timeless quality that can masterfully cover a wide range of styles. The miasma of faded glamour and nostalgic pop noir of her critically lauded debut album, Neptune City, gave way to a more visceral rootsy rock oriented sound on 2011's unflinchingly honest Mondo Amore.

Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/02/2014 MY FAVORITE YEAR
The Adobe Theater
2/21-3/14/2014
This musical comedy by the award-winning musical team of Ahrens and Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, Ragtime, Seussical, Once on this Island) is based on the successful movie of the same name. Benjy Stone is a first-year writer on the "King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade" TV show (it smacks of Your Show of Shows starring Sid Caesar). The guest host for this week is Allan Swann, an over-the hill drunken, swashbuckling movie star. Benjy writes the script for a 3 Musketeers sketch, is ordered to keep Swann sober and under control, accompanies Swann to dinner at his mother's Brooklyn apartment, and ultimately convinces Swann to reconcile with his estranged daughter. (oh - and Benjy gets the show's female assistant as his girlfriend). Much of the comedy results from a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for the TV show. It features a hilarious script and superb music.
