Review: THE FROZEN SECTION thaws at Catastrophic Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Apr 7, 2025

It has a stunning cast, technical brilliance, and enough great poetic ideas to keep you thinking about it for days. It’s an intriguing piece that should have a long life. But in its current iteration playing at the MATCH, THE FROZEN SECTION runs long at almost two hours with no intermission, and the pacing seems off throughout its inflated run time.

Review: THE FERRYMAN at Hole In The Wall Theater
by Jared Reynolds - Apr 6, 2025

The Hole in the Wall Theater showed commitment, passion, and heart in bringing The Ferryman to the stage, and it’s a performance well worth seeing. The double doors opened, and the audience is greeted with the authentic interior of the Carney household. This cluttered, yet familiar space immediately brought to mind a large, multi-generational family, rife with chaos, love, and fits of shouting. My goodness, how accurate that turned out to be.

by Ilana Lucas - Mar 28, 2025

In Caleigh Crow’s THERE IS VIOLENCE AND THERE IS RIGHTEOUS VIOLENCE AND THERE IS DEATH OR, THE BORN-AGAIN CROW at Buddies in Bad Times, rage is the thing with feathers. The production, a collaboration between Buddies and Native Earth Performing Arts, celebrates the flame of righteous anger when powerful people suppress others, deferring to systems rather than offering even the slightest bit of relief or kindness that is in their power to give.

Jonathan Maitland’s portrayal starts when Wilko Johnson at the height of his fame has the bad luck to be marked for death both on screen and off. As Game of Thrones’ mute executioner who lops off Eddard Stark's head, he ends up on Arya Stark's infamous list; months later, he’s given the worst possible news: a tumour in his pancreas meant that Johnson had less than a year left to live.

Review: THE WOMEN OF LLANRUMNEY, Stratford East
by Cindy Marcolina - Mar 27, 2025

Azuka Oforka’s powerful debut play transports us to the Llanrumney sugar estate in Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica, in 1765, where Elizabeth Morgan (Nia Roberts) lays the law as an unwed modern entrepreneur who’s facing the failure of her crops. All of a sudden, the threat to their survival exacerbates their battle of self-preservation and heart-wrenching compromise. Coming straight from a starry sell-out run at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff, The Women of Llanrumney is a layered exploration of tyranny and endurance directed by Patricia Logue.
