A telephone, a key, and a carefully timed call. DIAL M FOR MURDER wastes no time laying out its stakes. At the Stanley BFL Canada Stage, the Arts Club Theatre Company presents Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of the classic thriller, directed by Jillian Keiley and running February 5 to March 8. In partnership with Theatre Calgary, the production pulls the audience into a polished 1950s London flat where each gesture feels deliberate and even the quiet moments heighten the tension.

Normally, in a who-done-it, the question facing the audience is to figure out who the killer is. In DIAL M FOR MURDER, which is now on-stage at Great Lakes Theater, Jeffrey Hatcher, who rewrote the present play version of the epic, doesn’t leave us in the air.

First staged in 1952 and made iconic by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film adaptation, DIAL M FOR MURDER, now showing here in Austin and produced by Jarrott Productions, has long held its place as one of the most stylish and suspenseful thrillers in theatre. Originally penned by Frederick Knott, the play spins a darkly intricate web of deception, betrayal, and the illusion of the perfect crime.

Murder, greed, blackmail, love affairs and a potential hanging are just some of the many dark subjects that form the fabric of the fabulous production of DIAL M FOR MURDER now playing at Shea's 710 Theatre. Who doesn't love a good old fashioned murder mystery? Alfred Hitchcock turned this nail biter into a classic film with Grace Kelly and Ray Miland in 1954. But everything old is new again, as playwright Jeffrey Hatcher has updated and adapted the original play by Frederick Knott into something equally intriguing and possibly even more salacious for current audience sensibilities.

Being a fan of Alfred Hitchcock’s works, I was eager to see The Forum Theatre’s production of acclaimed Jeffrey Hatcher's new adaptation of Frederick Knott's Dial M for Murder. Hatcher’s adaptation of the classic suspense thriller pays homage to the original and is a smart, tight, compelling update of Knott’s tale of jealousy, deception, and homicide. For those who have been fans of all things Hitchcock, The Forum’s production of Dial M for Murder will hit every nuance. From the dangling burning cigarette to the ever-present liquor cabinet and the constant pouring of whiskey or brandy.

The audience I saw DIAL M FOR MURDER with roared to their feet after all was said and done. This is a charming production with plenty of technical eye candy and sublime campy takes on characters. These kinds of shows fit what THE ALLEY THEATRE does best: entertain and thrill us with a summer mystery. Everyone is set to have a marvelously good time.

What did our critic think of DIAL M FOR MURDER at MILWAUKEE REPERTORY THEATER? Seat-gripping and immensely satisfying -- that’s Dial M for Murder, a new adaptation by playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, now on stage at the Milwaukee Rep. Under the direction of Laura Braza, this updated take on Frederick Knott’s 1952 original and Hitchcock’s 1954 film stays true to the source with some refreshing updates. But blackmail and revenge, passion and plot twists all remain in this thrilling piece of theater.
