The 2026 Helen Hayes Award nominations have been announced, recognizing outstanding achievement in Washington-area professional theatre. Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, and dozens of regional companies are represented across performance, direction, design, and production categories. The awards highlight the breadth of theatre work presented throughout the D.C. metropolitan area.

The Barrow Group, in collaboration with The Kaufer Group, will present a private industry reading of INVISIBLE INK, a new play by Christine Toy Johnson. The event will feature prominent actors and explore themes of memory and perception.

Second Stage Theater celebrated its Fall Gala, honoring lifelong supporters of the arts, Melissa and Gregory Fleming, and director and playwright James Lapine. The gala featured a one-night-only evening of entertainment directed by Susan Stroman, with music direction by Andrew Resnick, and hosted by Andrew Rannells. The Inheritance (as in the title of the same award-winning epic play now being presented in a moving and masterly production at Bethesda’s Round House Theatre) is the legacy that must be respected, remembered and passed on from generation to generation so that a record of the tortuous winding road of LGBTQ history can never be forgotten or erased.

Today's subject Robert Sella is currently living his theatre life onstage at Round House Theatre as he prepares to begin performances of Matthew López's epic play The Inheritance. The show is performed in two parts and will begin performances on August 27th running through October 19th.
