Jason Wetzel Biography
Jason is a pianist, conductor, arranger, and music director based in New York City. Originally from Pennsylvania, Jason studied at Penn State as a B.M. Piano Performance major. Quickly moving into the musical theatre world, he performed and music directed for Allan Albert Productions at HersheyPark during the summers of college. Following school, Jason moved to West Lafayette, IN as Assistant Director of Purdue Musical Organizations. In addition to working with the world-famous Purdue Glee Club, he was also assistant director for the PMO Christmas Show, which is performed live each year for 36,000 people and is broadcast internationally on PBS and the Voice of America Radio Network.Jason then began a long residence at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. He was featured as the pianist at the Hoop Dee Doo Revue, as well as performing on Main Street, USA, the Comedy Warehouse, the Grand Floridian Resort, and the Magic Kingdom Castle Stage. In addition, he also rehearsed with the Voices of Liberty, taught Disney Sings choir workshops, and played for numerous auditions and conventions. While in Orlando, Jason also worked for Universal Studios and Sea World. He was the resident Music Director for Mad Cow Theatre and the Orlando company of Menopause the Musical. Other Florida credits include: Winter Park Playhouse, Players Theatre of Sarasota, and Theatre Winter Haven.
Starting in Florida, Jason added a long list of national touring credits that came to include: Hairspray, Wicked, Jersey Boys, Annie, and Spamalot. He was the associate conductor for the national tour of The Producers. Jason was the Music Director and conductor of the national tours of The Drowsy Chaperone and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. He was the associate conductor for the first national tour of Young Frankenstein and then went on to become the Music Supervisor for the non-equity tour.
Jason’s regional credits include 11 seasons and over 20 productions at Maine State Music Theatre. Also: Ogunquit Playhouse, Gateway Playhouse, Northern Stage, and American Theater Group.
In New York City, Jason’s credits include: Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Heart and Lights (Radio City), Cotton Club Parade (City Center), A Bed and a Chair (City Center), NAMT, NYMF. He has also been the Music Director of Mainstage Programming for BroadwayCon.
In 2013, Jason was assistant conductor for the Broadway production of After Midnight, making his Broadway conducting debut with guest star Vanessa Williams. He went on to the Broadway labs for Shuffle Along, working alongside Savion Glover and George C. Wolfe. Recently, he was an assistant Music Director for the Broadway lab of Crazy For You, directed by Susan Stroman.
Jason is also active in both the cabaret world and musical theatre education. He is a pianist and coach for Actor Therapy, working closely with Linsday Mendez, Ryan Scott Oliver, Sierra Boggess, Peter Duchan and others.
He has been fortunate to perform all over the United States, Canada, and Europe, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Qatar, and Indonesia.
