Victory Gardens Theatre Presents BEST OF TEKKI, 1/23

By: Jan. 18, 2011

Victory Gardens presents The Best of Tekki, a one-night only solo performance written and performed by Tekki Lomnicki as part of Crip Slam, a segment of Victory Gardens Access Project. The performance is Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 7:30PM in the Richard Christiansen Theater at the Victory Gardens Biograph, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Park.

Tekki Lomnicki, winner of the 2010 Gribsby Award for Excellence in the Art of Solo Performance presents three pieces: Thanksgiving, Tekki's classic first solo show about growing up Catholic and the journey with her mother to Lourdes; Clothing Optional, which gives the audience an intimate peek at what goes on at a clothing-optional commune in Northern California; and Mr. Sandman, where Tekki's unconscious mind runs amuck, short-circuiting her sleep patterns, dreams and CPAP machine.

Tekki is the Artistic Director of Tellin' Tales Theatre, a company dedicated to building community through storytelling and works with adults and children with and without disabilities. She also teaches her class "It's All About Me: Creating the One Person Show" at the Victory Gardens Training Center. Part of the Victory Gardens Access Project, Crip Slam is a series of performances, readings, movies and other events that promote, explore and celebrate disability culture. The series was launched in 2005 as Disability Culture Sundays. In its second year, Access Project participants re-named the series to the more provocative Crip Slam in order to generate attention and discussion.

"I am particularly excited to share this body of work with the Access audience because the themes will resonate so well with the people with disabilities in the audience," says Lomnicki. "Themes like parental overprotection, body image and overachieving reoccur in most conversations I have with my friends, colleagues and students with a disability. However, what's cool is that able-bodied audience members can relate to my work as well. If the storytelling is good, a connection will be made no matter how seemingly different one is from the storyteller. I have to admit that the Access audience is my favorite audience to perform for because it always feels like I am home in my childhood living room performing for family. There's always so much laughter, groans of sympathy and lots and lots of love."

The Best of Tekki is Sunday, January 23, 2011 only, at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago.  Tickets are $15 and are available through the Victory Gardens Box Office, 773.871.3000, www.victorygardens.org
