Now 50 dead and the worst mass shooting in US history. Just beyond horrible. All those probably young lives lost and their families…just no words. Clearly, this has to be addressed on the show, which realistically has to go on and cannot be canceled. Poor James Corden. How should they handle this? Only thing I can come up with is a cold open of the show with a very simple version of "You Have To Be Carefully Taught" from South Pacific.
Or do they now need to cancel?

I think they should postpone.
It would be extremely odd to go on with the show on the day of the worst mass shooting in US history.

Yes it is a terrible, terrible thing, but they will not cancel the Tonys. And they won't start a celebratory evening with a song like that and make everyone feel horrible all night. Perhaps there will be a moment of silence/acknowledgement. I would hope so, at least.

There is a very direct connection to the bway community. The co owner ran Broadway in Orlando, and now runs the hippodrome in Baltimore. The club hosted events for touring Broadway casts etc. this is so heartbreaking- can't stop crying

Going on with the show tonight is extremely tacky and tasteless. It is all about the money not bringing a "glimmer of joy" tonight. I know I won't be watching, I'll read to see who wins but right now, I couldn't care less.

It really cannot be canceled or postponed. That's not a realistic expectation at all. I agree with one the posters who said this can bring joy to a country in morning.

To say the show couldn't go on is senseless - hundreds of jobs are on the line because shows need publicity to stay open and this is the best way to get it.
That being said, I think there should be a connection between the shooting in Orlando and the show. Whether that be a moment of silence, a special tribute, or simple acknowledgement that we have to change something. In fact, the show that will be most celebrated tonight is a walking advertisement of the need for gun control.

Of course the show can't be postponed, don't be ridiculous. I'm sure there will be some sort of statement, moment of silence, or perhaps even a short, simple number to memorialize the lives lost.

Postponing/cancelling the ceremony simply gives in even further to the toxic hatred of the man who committed this horrific act. It must go on, at the very least for our integrity.

No other award show has been in their situation. I don't think it's a tacky decision, it was probably a hard one since they had no precedent to go by. As someone else said this will bring a light of joy.

It's already been established that they will dedicate the evening to the victims and their families.
There are many reasons why it won't/shouldn't be postponed. I won't be suprised, however, if there are interruptions throughout the night. And I'll go out on a limb, that it might not be available to see in Florida area all .
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I understand the desire to postpone, but I think that to continue, to carry on, to dedicate, and to move forward, is the way to demonstrate that we will not be cowed. We will not be broken. We will be heartbroken. And furious. But as a community with such a strong queer presence: we will not be silenced.
No disrespect to those who disagree. I understand, truly I think, where you're coming from. It will be a mournful year, yes, I just think the light needs to continue to shine on.

Emmys were postponed twice after 911. I always liked how Joan Rivers handled The Tonight Show after the Challenger explosion--basically acknowledging the tragedy and saying let's take this time to reflect and relax. Regardless, a very sad day for America.

The shooting makes me truly sick to my stomach, but it is imperative that the Tony Awards broadcast goes on tonight. This is the single most visible platform the LGBT community and its supporters has on network television each year. It is an opportunity for the community to say this kind of hate is not acceptable. Nor will the LGBT community be silenced by hate.

The 53rd Academy Awards in 1981 were postponed a day due to the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan. And the 53rd Emmy Awards, originally scheduled for September 16, 2001, were delayed twice due to the September 11th attacks and the airstrikes on Afghanistan, and were finally held on November 4, 2001. "No other awards show has been in their position" is hogwash.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I would say that it would be more disrespectful to postpone - certainly at least some of the victims were planning to watch the show, and would want it to continue as scheduled. In addition, all of the extensive planning that goes into the show is too much to just cancel/postpone at the last minute. There's no way it would happen. The best thing to do is to honor the victims of this horrific tragedy and put on a great show that everyone can be proud of.

Is it feasible to postpone? I get that they should but any other award postponement (9/11, Reagan shooting) had an advance. Has there ever been a day of postponing? I think it's the respectful thing to do but how do you deal with things like the SA cast, etc who are already in town? Another Kickstarter? It's a sticky situation.

I don't think that any other situation has actually occurred the day of/night before. So he's technically right. The other postponed events had time to cancel.
