The Strand Theater Company seeks a highly dedicated, volunteer Managing Director to oversee the administrative functions of both the Strand's physical space and artistic offerings. The Strand's mission is dedicated to providing opportunities for women artists, writers, designers, and directors while focusing on original works, in order to foster a love of theater for a new generation of patrons.
The Strand operates a 50-seat, flexible-configuration, black box theater out of a converted row home at 1823 North Charles Street in the Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Now in its fourth season and with an annual budget of $30,000, the Strand was recently approved to receive annual support from the Maryland State Arts Council. The Strand offers a 5-play subscription season and a free, bi-monthly play reading series under the Station North Second Saturdays program. In addition, numerous artists and companies rent the venue. Currently under the leadership of Founding Artistic Director Jayme Kilburn, the company also seeks a new Artistic Director, to commence in May, 2012, as well as a Technical Director. The board of directors of the Strand currently has three voting members.Primary ResponsibilitiesCoordinate long-range and annual planning in collaboration with the Artistic Director and the Board of Directors. Develop and execute strategic fundraising activities, donor development, grant seeking, and grant reporting, in partnership with Board of Directors. Develop the annual budget, including providing monthly financial reporting, cash flow management, capital spending. and expenditures review and approval. Develop and execute marketing plans for all productions, subscription efforts, and rentals, including coordination of all print materials, online listings, social media platforms, and the maintenance of www.strand-theater.org. Hire and supervise both administrative and front of house volunteers. Administer and support, in conjunction with the Artistic Director, all programs and special events. Act as the representative and advocate of the theatre with government agencies, insurance companies, community and local business groups, and arts organizations. Possess some experience in a non-profit arts management/leadership position, with knowledge of fundraising, grant writing, budgeting and financial management, marketing, and public relations. Foster the development of positive relationships with other cultural organizations by participating in meetings and joint activities. where appropriate. Primary Responsibilities· Operation and maintenance of the technical assets of the theatre, including: lighting, sound, and communications equipment and the use and maintenance of stage facilities. · Determine the necessary technical supports necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates. · Design, set up, maintain, and operate lighting and sound systems for productions and assist designers and rentals with technical matters. · Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management. · Assist in recruiting and training of volunteer technical staff for individual shows. · Orient facility renters to safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations and facilitate all rentals. · Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment, as well as the physical plant; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment. · Assist with the preparation and control of production budget and maintain inventory. · Attend technical week rehearsals to supervise and assist in mounting the show. · Make recommendations to theatre leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
