The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island will present the Long Island Premiere of W.S. Gilbert's play "Sweethearts" at 8:00pm Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Ethical Humanist Society.

Dedicated to preserving the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, this performance is the first ever by the Company and first staging of the work on Long Island. Written in 1874 and not revived, even in Britain, until 2007, "Sweethearts" was considered Gilbert's best and most popular pre-Arthur Sullivan stage work. In his new performing version written for the Company, Phil Gellis has assembled appropriate music from the Gilbert and Sullivan canon to complement the stage action.

Tickets priced at $20 per person. All proceeds benefit the Opera Company. To reserve tickets call 516.795.7745 or 631.275.6400, or visit www.gilbert-and-sullivan.net. Tickets will be available at the door but seating is limited. The Ethical Humanist Society is located at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY.

Founded in 1954, the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island is one of the nation's oldest organizations devoted exclusively to the promotion and performance of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. The performers are all volunteers and come from every walk of life. While very different in many ways, they all have one thing in common: a passion to preserve and present these classic comic operas that has enriched and entertained generations of Long Island audiences.
