BWW Review: THE BODYGUARD, Dominion Theatre, 21 July 2016
by Marianka Swain - Jul 22, 2016

Gunshots! Flames! Shirtless dancing hunks! And that's just the first five minutes. This eye-wateringly bombastic musical has all subtlety, production values and narrative logic of a Donald Trump rally. Thoughtful, incisive drama? Er, no. Winningly OTT kitsch with killer song delivery? Hell yes. Come for the copious dry ice and cheese-tastic effects - stay for the 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' encore singalong. (more...)

BWW Review: Starkly Dark and Raw Revival of CABARET Returns Decadently to the Pantages
by Don Grigware - Jul 21, 2016

Perhaps Kander and Ebb's best musical, apart from Chicago, Cabaret has it all: a fine book, deliciously diverse characters, dynamite music and a subtext that will not quit. The subtext being: either compromise or get out if you value your life, the latter, to be sure, the wiser. This is Berlin, circa 1929/30, before Hitler, just as Nazi pressure hits the fan. Now a national tour based on Roundabout Theatre's 2013 revival docks at the Pantages for a mere 3 weeks with a glorious cast headed by Randy Harrison in a big, broad and devilishly fun performance as the Emcee. BWW Review: The MUNY's Hilarious Production of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
by Chris Gibson - Jul 17, 2016

I grew up looking forward to the weekend, because that's when channel 30 would broadcast 'Chiller Theater', providing a burgeoning horror fan like myself with the chance to view all the creepy classics that sprang from the loins of Universal Studios during the 1930's and 40's. I was a preteen when YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN played at the Westport cinema for a year! Yeah, movies used to actually do that. So, it was a genuine treat to see one of my favorite monsters lovingly parodied by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. And, it was with much anticipation that I looked forward to seeing the musical version of this beloved comedy from my childhood on the grand stage of The Muny. I think it's an extremely entertaining show, filled with a plethora of familiar gags, as well as some outstanding performances. This well cast and delightfully staged production is full of gorgeously spooky scenery and fun musical numbers, and I highly recommend that everyone catch this particular presentation, because it's far and away more humorous and spirited than the touring show that came through several years ago. BWW Review: Outrageously Fun GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE Hits 5th Ave
by Jay Irwin - Jul 15, 2016

When you're catching the touring production of a show you saw with it's original cast on Broadway, you hope that the folks on tour will be up to par at least somewhat. Such was my fear catching the touring company of the Tony Award winning Best Musical "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" currently playing at the 5th Avenue Theatre especially for one quite daunting role where the actor must play nine different people. Well, luckily the touring company was completely up to the task especially in that one role making for a hilarious and rousing evening that only did honor to my memory of the original. (more...)

BWW Review: WHOREHOUSE Delivers Outstanding Performances at the Playhouse
by Backstage Bunny - Jul 11, 2016

While I have reservations about the show itself, the latest production of 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' is probably the best directed show I have seen at the Playhouse. Director David Nanny has coaxed some outstanding and highly amusing performances from his cast, turning a mediocre musical into a highly enjoyable show - particularly in the first half. (more...)
