With the start of his 'lots of shows in a row' tour about a month away, major international electronic musician deadmau5 has today (2/24) revealed the first of six behind-the-scenes videos with YouTube Music for Cube 2.1. The new video showcases deadmau5 and crew creatively developing his updated, custom-built cube--a kinetic version of his previous cube with many enhancements--at Tait in the middle of Amish Country, Pennsylvania (Lititz, PA). Standing at 17 ft. tall, 20 ft. wide and 31 ft. deep, making it larger than its predecessors, Cube 2.1 features internal robots that push the sides of the cube--consisting of state-of-the-art LED panels--up and around while projecting brand new graphics.  (more...)

BWW Review: THE DEVIL'S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH at Rubicon Theatre Company

It's been 80 years since Bessie Smith, the celebrated Empress of the Blues, died a lonely death, after an auto accident on a desolate Mississippi road. Contrary to legend, Smith did not bleed to death after being refused admission to a white Southern hospital. That story was related to Down Beat magazine by Columbia Records impresario John Hammond, who later apologized, saying that it was all based on hearsay. But her injuries were severe enough so that when she was taken to the nearest hospital (which happened to be one that accepted blacks), that she was beyond saving, and died at the young age of 43. Each season, the Keen Playwrights Lab brings together three mid-career playwrights to develop new full-length plays inspired by Keen Company's mission. Under the leadership of Jeremy Stoller, Keen's Director of New Work, writers meet throughout the year to create new plays that provoke identification, reflection, and emotional connection. The Playwrights Lab culminates with a reading of each new play in the spring, attended by the Keen community, the theater industry, and the general public. She and the board have chosen DLC staffer and long-time local theater director Wm. Bullion as her replacement.
