Poetic Theater Productions (Jeremy Karafin and Alex Mallory, Co-Artistic Directors) kicks off its 5th season August 18-20 at Wild Project with Conscious Language: conversation and performance on the power of the spoken word curated by emcee/playwright muMs (HBO's 'Oz', upcoming "A Sucker Emcee" at LAByrinth Theater Company) and featuring poet/musician Saul Williams (Broadway's Holler If Ya Hear Me, "Slam"), playwrights Jose Rivera (Marisol, "The Motorcycle Diaries") and Dominique Morisseau (Detroit 67, Sunset Baby), poet/recording artist Ursula Rucker (She Said, Ruckus Soundsysdom, 3 albums with The Roots), director/producer Kamilah Forbes (Sunset Baby, 'Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry', Hip Hop Theatre Festival) and more. Speaking about his impulse to create Conscious Language, muMs says 'My hope is that this festival will be the beginning of an important discussion about the responsibility we have as artists to our community'. The Old Globe today announced the full cast and creative team for the World Premiere of Bright Star, a new American musical featuring music by Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, lyrics by Brickell, and book by Martin, based on an original story by Martin and Brickell. Directed by Walter Bobbie, Bright Star will run September 13 - November 2, 2014 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run September 13 - September 27. Opening night is Sunday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. Single tickets go on sale on Friday, August 8 at noon. (more...)

Stark Naked Theatre to Present THE GOD GAME Through 9/20

Following a critically-acclaimed third season, Stark Naked Theatre Company opens its fourth season on September 5th with the southwest regional premiere of The God Game, written by award-winning playwright Suzanne Bradbeer. Critics praised The God Game in its world premiere earlier this year, calling it "a superb new drama" and "the sort of new work that theatre fans long to see." And just in time for election season, Houston audiences will likewise be enthralled with Stark Naked's production of this exciting political drama. The God Game is a relevant and thought-provoking new play that deftly examines the role of faith on the national political stage. Dorset Theatre Festival will present the song cycle from Dillingham City by the exciting writing team of Lucy Thurber and Matt Gould, as part of their New Play Reading Series on August 9th at 3 pm. The presentation, which will include songs from the show in development as well as a talk with the writers about their process, will be directed by Kent Nicolson, the acclaimed Director of Musical Theater and Literary Associate for Playwrights Horizons in New York City.
